OT - but does anyone know how to make a picture transparent in Photoshop?

I want to try and make a logo for my new coin website I am designing, but can't seem to make a logo that looks nice. I want to take a image, and make it transparent, and lay text over it. But can't seem to figure it out. I have Adobe Photoshop 7.0, is there a feature on there somewhere? Thanks for any help!

Go to image - adjust then go to levels.
