  • Phoney in my book. Looks to cool to be real.

  • Is that a coin from the Appalachian Hoard that is graded by NGC. The coins were all silver wartime issues so that coin could very well be from that hoard. Tell me if I am wrong.image

Real....looks like its from the Appalachian Hoard as Coinaddict said. We see 1000's of tone silver 5c's and these colors and pattern are common.....but they can be made so be careful. image

i have 3 that have similar colors (though not as vibrant) with that same pattern - all purchased from separate sources (not Ebay). i think they're the "real deal".

Another beautiful coin from the Appalachlain Hoard which just sold for $375. It's a real stunner!

HMM...60% phony, 40% real. My hunch is that if nobody had mentioned the Appalachian Hoard, it would have been more like 90% phony and 10% real.

  • Russ- are you saying there is a branding bias?

    Kim,

Not a branding bias. More like a "I'll base my opinion on what the experts say" tendency. As little as I know about this stuff - and, frankly it is very little - I have learned that there are really very few here who actually know what they're talking about when it comes to the toning issue. Many simply follow those few, or wait for a clue before offering an opinion.

  • I see your point Russ. But, I also believe that is the beauty of an open forum like this- an eclectic bunch, with a wide range of experinces, and levels of expertise. I think there are less sheep here than is sometimes perceived.

My vote would have been for the real deal, but not with a lot of confidence. I thought it was real because of the luster present on the obverse, particularily near the date. The reverse was hard to tell if any luster was present or not. A very cool coin, Russ.
Here is another example from the Appalacian hoard, I owned this piece a couple of years ago.image
An interesting aside.........a fellow board member had a half dozen of these pieces about a year ago. He only collects coins in pcgs slabs, and was told they would not cross so he let them all go. I guess the story goes that the Appalacian collection was taken intact (in the rolls) to NGC for grading and was OK'd by the top dogs there. My question is has anybody seen any of these in pcgs holders? image
  • I don't own any in PCGS holders, but I do know for a fact that a few have crossed over from NGC slabs. The coins did not have the NGC star.

Russ you are a smart guy, you have figured out by now there is no standard out there to say definitively whether a coin has "naturally" toned on been helped. Your submissions to PCGS have proven that, as you have had at least one coin bodybagged for questionalbe toning and then finally holdered. These nickels fall into the category of could be or couldn't be. NGC did decide to slab them, i.e. the appalachian hoard. I have not seen any in a PCGS slab. When I spotted a case of these at FUN my two reactions were, some of the most beautifully toned coins I have ever seen and hmm are these natural and if so how could this have happened. Lakesammam and shylock viewed them also and I think their reaction was similar to mine.

To quote the seller of these coins, "they are 6 dollar coins selling for $200 plus." If I was a jeff collector I would have purchased one on the spot, just for the beauty. The one you posted looks similar to some of the appalachian. I say enjoy the coin for what it is and not worry about how it got the way it did.
