1964 SMS Kennedy Half on Teletrade opens HUGE.

This one will be fun to watch. I think it will end up being a "not sold".

Hey Russ - I looks like it's got Accent Hair. That would really surprise me. As I understand it, the Accent Hair Kennedys were dropped early in the proof run due. I would think a trial for the 1965 SMS coins would be conducted later in the year, after the AHs are long gone. I suppose this means that they were conducted earlier, perhaps before the 1964 proof coins were even minted?

    All speculation on my part.

    Tom,

What you're thinking is Accented Hair is actually just a very strong strike.

I guess that's a common occurrence on Teletrade with these high-priced moderns?

Damn, I didn't realize it, but...

No image, and it's at $14,500.00.

  • My understanding is that there are only five of these that exist. It is a rare coin. I am told that is has a matte finish, which accounts for its color.

It used to be in a PCGS MS68 slab - incorrectly holdered as a business strike.

    Hey Kranky,

Modern or not, you don't find this coin to be a "significant" error? Not that I am trying to justify that price, but, isn't this coin in a completely different category than a ultra-grade modern, that is what it is in or out of the slab?

This is one modern that would likely sell for just as much raw as it would slabbed.

I've asked HRH on the question boards a couple of times to relate what he knows about the 1964 SMS coins. So far, however, no answer. (Note: I did not ask him how PCGS tells a 1964 SMS coin from a well struck MS issue--I asked what he, as a major coin dealer, knows about how and why these coins were issued.)

The nickel is now up to $18,000. The cent is only $4,200 but the cent is maximum butt ugly....

Right you are, Gilbert. I must have seen SMS and the "1964" didn't even register with me when I posted that. I don't know that I'd call it an error, but I've read there are only about a dozen sets known, so it's certainly rare enough - in or out of the slab, as you and Russ said.

I find it interesting that these 1964 SMS coins seem to come up for sale pretty often considering how few there are.

    Kranky,

The thing I wonder about, though, is do they actually sell or do they get bought back by the owner? It'll be interesting to see what happens with this group - all five coins were listed.

    Links:

The cent was at $4200 at close.

The nickel was at $18000 at close.

The dime was at $8000 at close.

The quarter was at $11000 at close.

The half was at $15000 at close.

...........interesting coins that seem to appear regularly at teletrade. can anyone say fishing expedition??

what i find ironic is that the Jefferson was the high dollar coin at close to $20K. the first time i recall seeing one of those at the site it closed at around $8K about a year ago, unsold of course. with a scant 8-10 coins reported and most held long term, how else is the owner who wants to dump a coin going to get an overblown price?? the answer is clear----repeat auction sales which seem to get a bit higher with each go-round!!

of course, i could be totally wrong and just a cynic.

Repeat auction sales through Teletrade has got to be expensive - with buy-backs at 10% , would someone really want to spend over $5000 just to bump up prices of their coins???

What is the deal with NACT - someone said North American Certified Trading is a subsiduary of Greg Manning Auctions - owners of Teletrade and other stuff.

If this is true, does that mean they are schill bidding on Teletrade??? That also could explain the generic gold stuff they have been running through (Express Gold) - does anyone know?
Has the stuff they are selling on eBay, recently gone through the Teletrade site??
