    hey marty

i'll be honest, i really can't see spending the submission fees on those toned Jeffersons, BUT having seen some of the prices you've realized on eBay i can understand why you do it!! maybe i should re-phrase that to read "i can't see spending the money some eBay members spend" on such common coins just because they're in a PCGS holder.

i just returned from the local shop and passed on some toned nickels cause i have so many and see so many that i've gotten really selective. one that i did snag is a 1963 that has frosted ice-blue devices framed by faint purple fields to give a wonderful cameo effect, probably PR68. i paid the princely sum of $2.

do you have much success with the mid-50's nickels?? i've noticed quite a few 1956 coins with rainbow tone.

Congrats on that 1955! Now I have to cross mine to NGC for a 67*. image
  • geez keets, don't tell them that you can buy those blue and purple toned 60's proof Jeffersons for $2 or so, they will ridicule you and tell you that it is not possible. If anyone hasn't noticed the hundreds and hundreds of these that are on Ebay or posted here as new purchases all the time, they are common, and certainly not the exception and the price asked for them by some members and Ebay sellers is absolutely absurd.

    Andy and Keets,

Since you can buy these nickels all day long for $2, I'll give you a chance to make obscene profits. I'll give you guys $4 each for every single one you can come up with. You can double your money with little effort. But, they have to really be toned. Not some whisper of color, but the real deal. Like this:

Just PM me and tell me how many you have - remember, they must look just as good as the one above - and I'll PayPal you the money immediately.

  • Russ,

First, I am not a coin dealer, I am a collector. I only sell items that I no longer collect or that does not fit in my collection. Secondly, I don't need a measly $2 profit per coin, so you can flip it on Ebay to unsuspecting buyers who have no idea as to the ease of finding these coins. If I were after money, I am quite capable of listing on Ebay myself, or selling them to typetone, who pays $7 or so per coin.

Andy, I don't think finding one coin in every 50 proof sets is easy and finding a nice "monster" one is even harder. I have been collecting them for over 10 years and have looked through thousands of proof sets. A nice toned coin is a rare find! Light toned ones are common, but the true monsters are really tough to find.

I'll give you $5 each for every one you have that looks like this one!

  • your absolutely right about the color on that one pictured Marty, those are a little tougher to find than the common, lightly toned pastel that Russ pictured. Ok, one in 50 sets, well, from my experience they are quite easier than that, but going on one nicely toned Jefferson per 50 sets, and these run from 1960-1964(of course other dates are found with the blue and purple coloration, but not with the ease that the years stated are) so that means there are only 299,285 to go around. And they are scarce???????

Yep, I could have written your answer word for word.
