UPDATED: Has Anyone Seen This Coin Image Elsewhere?

Link

I'm wondering if this one is legit. There's more than the typical feedback and it is all good--albeit on small dollar transactions from the ones that are still available.

BTW, the seller previously had this coin listed with no reserve and the bidding went a little over $14k before all the bids were cancelled and the auction ended.

Furthermore, I did contact him about the buy it now price and was told it was $15k. So, I then asked about escrow and was told "If you want to buy the transaction will be trough my bank." I then asked what that meant and was told "Thats mean that i will shipp the coin after i have the money into mmy bank account."

While the price is quite favorable ($10k below greysheet), I am going to pass up this bargain. My money/brains ratio just does not allow me to bite. image

Ask for a scan of the reverse... if the seller says no, then there may be a problem.

  • So this is another one of those auctions where the seller lists it low (relatively speaking, anyway) to avoid the reserve price auction fees, and then cancels the auction right before the end if it doesn't get up toward the $15 that he wants to net out of this. That, in addition to his response to Wayne, would certainly steer me clear of this auction.

looks dicey due to the nature of the previous auctions. If you do want validation, ask for a larger scan or a scan at a different angle to prove that it is in his possession. Also, if no escrow is accepted make sure you only send it to a physical address that you can use to track him down and break his kneecaps lest he not deliver the coin after payment has been made.

Ask them if you can see the coin in person - get their address and then have someone from here that is within 50 miles go visit the coin.

Are you afraid they do not have the coin, the coin is stolen property, or if you buy you will not get item and be out 15K?

I find it a little odd that they post a 3 day auction, unless they really need cash in a hurry and willing to take a 40% loss.

If it sounds too good to be true....... He could blow that coin out at any mid to large coin show at 20k+ Why would he pass up over 5k in additional profit?image
  • Kind of reminds me of the dealer I ran into 2 weeks ago. He had some really good looking Franklins. I asked to look at 2 of them. After examining the first 2 coins and handing them back to the dealer, I inquired about a 3rd coin. The dealer flipped the coin onto the top of the display case (in a vinyl flip ), and said in a very gruff manner, "30 dollars, take it or leave it" I made my mind up at that point, that I would still look at the coin, but pass on it regardless of condition. It was a 1960 Franklin in about MS65 FBL. It was tough to do, but I handed the coin back and left............Ken

Well, once again the seller cancelled all bids and ended the auction. Last I recall seeing, the bidding was around $15,100. According to the link at the top of the ended auction page, it says it was relisted but when I click the new auction link it says it is unavailable in the sort of way that happens when eBay pulls an auction.

PS: I did e-mail the seller about some other images and was told the one in the auction was the only one available.

Good work dimeadzn! That is the same coin and verbatim description. I had done a google search as well but missed that one somehow. I'll watch this seller and see if it comes back up again.

...AND the same photo from the site dimeadzn linked. Does anyone know Stanford Coins and Bullion? That's the dealer who is offering the coin on the goantiques site.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

This isn't the first time that Stanford Coin and Bullion has had an "image problem"...A nice pop1/0 Seated Quarter of theirs was up on eBay a few month ago in a similar scam. The criminals are getting smarter; the picture has been laundered through iPIX this time instead of pulling it directly from the goantiques site. I let them know about the fun and games last time...
