I stopped in at a local coin shop...
As I was perusing the inventory, the proprietor and his assistant start in about the "public" and how they are always trying to get a free appraisal. Then, he proceeds to pull from his case and "show" me a partial set of nice looking coins.A casual glance tells me they are probably worth more than his sticker price,so I prepare to ask his price.
Suddenly, he says they are for another customer who likes these coins, and he`s gonna offer them to him first.I ask him one more time as he PUTS THEM BACK IN THE DISPLAY CASE if he`s sure I can`t buy them and he again reassures me they are for his SPECIAL customer.
You gotta love coin dealers!

A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

<< <i>That would be one less dealer that I would have anything to do with...
No, I bought a few coins AFTER that and I will keep going back.

Absolutely , Bear! Now that he knows you to be a buyer, rather than a window shopper, you will have greater access to the better coins. You may even become the SPECIAL customer of the future!
Those crusty ol'guys can be great sources once they know you will not waste their time "window shopping".
It just irks me that he has to sell it to someone else that most likely is less knowledgable than me.Alot of old-timers just can`t bring themselves to sell things to someone who knows more than themselves.I would`ve paid his price,I don`t chisel, who knows about the other SPECIAL buyer?
He`s done this stunt a couple times before, it just burns my britches.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
You should definitely tell HIM how you feel. Say something like "When am I going to be a "Special" customer? I spend a lot of money here and you tease me all the time and hurt my feelings when you do things like that, then tell me its for someone else. Either don't show me or offer them to me." Make sure you then leave without buying anything to make your point. Re-visit at a later date and see if things changed.
If you don't see a change after that, then he doesn't care a darn about YOU, go find a different "Pillar".
