What's wrong with this ad in Coin World???

I am not trying to flame anyone here, but I do have some questions regarding logic and basic marketing skills. Perhaps you can enlighten me....

Coin World Ad, Monday, April 28, 2003

ASA - Accugrade, Inc. Advertisement, page 8, an excerpt from the top of the ad:

* ACG HAS NEVER HAD A MAJOR COMPLAINT IN COIN WORLD IN 5 YEARS
* ACG HAS NEVER HAD A MAJOR COMPLAINT IN 19 YEARS IN BUSINESS

Okay now, according to the add, they had a major complaint at least 5 years and 1 day ago, so if one applies basic logic, how could they have not had a major complaint in 19 years in business? Am I missing something? I must be missing something. Wouldn't Coin World's advertising staff at least recommend some simple grammar and structure changes to ACG before they go to print with a $1000 ad?

With regard to basic marketing techniques, isn't it better to simple EXCLUDE any wording at all regarding complaints? I mean, then the assumption would be that there has not been a problem in the past, imo.

One final thought: Can someone define "major complaint" to me?

...unless they only started advertising in CW 5 years ago, but then wouldn't you say "never had a major complaint in Coin World"?

NumisEd, "* ACG HAS NEVER HAD A MAJOR COMPLAINT IN COIN WORLD IN 5 YEARS, Has ACG been advertising in Coin World more than 5 years? And/or exactly what does ACG consider a "MAJOR" complaint?

Their definition of major is different from any other grading service's definition. Mr. Hagar uses his own definition and it may or may not be the same as Webster's. image Sound familiar?

that is a rather vague statement. maybe it means that they've never murdered one of their customers.

A major complaint would be the one where a Federal Magistrate complains to them personally.

Why doesn't someone send them a letter that starts out with

    "I have a Major Complaint"

  • Goes to show, "If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is"

Ed, acg means that in 5 years they have never had a problem with coin world putting out their ads.

<<* ACG HAS NEVER HAD A MAJOR COMPLAINT IN 19 YEARS IN BUSINESS>>

acg means that no one has ever shown up at the business to file a major complaint in 19 years. image

"Never a major complaint" blah blah blah. Yeah, I guess that wasn't a major complaint that got them kicked out of the Baltimore Show. This came out at the ACG/Stuppler hearing in Charlotte. The story goes something like this:

Larry Whitlow had a 1916-D ACG Mercury dime with a glued on mintmark. He took the coin in the slab to the ACG table and handed it to Alan Hager and asked what he was going to do about it. Hager turned his back with the coin, and busted it out of the slab. He handed the coin back to Larry and told him to take it up with the person that sold it to him. Larry found the show's organizer and returned with him to the ACG table. After some pressure, Hager cut him a post dated check for the value of the coin as slabbed.

I'm disappointed to hear that someone with a good reputation like Larry Whitlow would even buy a coin in an ACG holder. image

Nicole Simpson never made a major complaint about the verdict.

If ACG has not had any major complaints in 19 years, why are they suing people for making negative comments about them? imageimageimage

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • Are we all missing the point here ......"I think thou doest protest too much".......when is the last time a Fortune 500 company used that statement ' never a major complaint...' in their advertising campaign......I think none....(well maybe Firestone tires..)

Would you count the editorial page as a major complaint? That's at least one.

Perhaps Larry purchased the coin knowing it to be a fake so that he could confront Alan with it.
