At what point does a coin

become ungradable (or net graded)?

baseball posted that Liberty nickel with the gouge right on the cheek graded PCGS MS66, yet I was looking at a 1909-s VDB that was net graded by ANACS because of a scratch in the periphery that took me about 30 seconds to even find, and that was only in the right light. It's not quite making sense to me.

what kinds of marks disqualify a coin?

I believe severe rim damage is one.

obviously a scratch is another. so am i to understand that if there's a scratch on a coin PCGS will bag it, but if i take it out of the bag and gouge out the scratch, then it can be graded? or is ANACS just anal about damage?

Not to the point, but, ANACS DID grade it, albeit with a net-grade. When the other services net-grade, they just don't anotate it on the holder. So, who's to say when a coin isn't net-graded (marked down because of a perceived problem) when PCGS or NGC slabs it? Maybe, many of the so-called "undergraded" coins are simply that; net grades. I don't believe that is the case, but I can't disprove it based on the fact net-grading isn't disclosed.

On point somewhat, ungradable and net-graded are not one and the same.

A rim nick doesn't detract from the grade much but it does limit the grade. So long as the scratch doesn't completely go through the rim. If it does, it's always body bagged.

ALL coins are gradable, except for where their identity can't be established. whether anacs tells you'r coin is worthy of a grade is secondary
