Definitely rare. Thanks for the link. It is a beauty. THe only peace $ I've seen that is better than my toned peace dollar. It's bag toning. Seems 1923 was a good year for peace $s to get toned. I see more 23s toned than any other date/mint. The planchet preparation and die preparation is responsible for many of the peace dollars staying white.
From what I've seen hit the market over the past year or so, seems that someone had a little fun experimenting with 1922 and 1923 Peace Dollars. A nice attempt at re-creating bag toning but I don't buy it. How often do see bag toned Morgans with colors like that on both sides, much less Peace Dollars? The color transition isn't right and that turquoise blue as well as the other colors are quite unnatural. These toned Peace Dollars are all over the place, a monster bag must have surfaced, it's a miracle!
Way too many questionable and AT coins popping up since prices got out of hand and discretion is the better part of valor these days.
As long as the topic of discussion is toned Peace dollars, I thought I would get your opinions of this coin I had on my watch list. I had a dinner meeting I couldn't get out of and wasn't able to get in a snipe. I really liked the coin.
That looks just like another one that has been posted here that several members owned. Same denomination, same color scheme, same brand holder. I bet it came from the same doctor that was selling them at Long Beach several years ago raw for $39. I see they are worth a lot more $$ in a reputable 3rd party's holder.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
<< <i>NGC is aware of this type of AT job now. It will be interesting to see if they buy them back.

The problem is that they will pay sheet (or close to it) for a coin, even if you call it 65 you're not even going to get a hundred bucks back from them....
stman I know gmarguli bought it in an eBay auction after you owned it. He was happy with it. I wonder if he still owns it and is still happy with it. DCAMFranklin the one you posted looks funky too.

Dcam... the one you posted is kinda tough from the image. I feel part of it is natural and part has been "worked on." if the purple is of the florescent nature which it looks like, than imo it's a bad coin.

Dragon, if i read correctly... there were many people on here saying the coin was bad, including some dealers. Why address your comments to just Dog and I? Not flaming or nothing just don't understand why people won't confront the dealer comments.

Man, that is how I felt about the coin. I've seen similar and found them to be original. I really like the coin, though I bet it looks more charcoal gray on good portions of the coin from many angles. I had hoped to have the opportunity to snipe the coin and was hacked when I wasn't able to be at a computer. Dragon, how did you find the price?
$112.50 may be a fair price, or it may be a bargain depending on what the piece looks like in person. People are under the misconception that all toned Peace dollars are scarce and desirable and worth a significant premium, they are not. There are plenty of marginally toned Peace dollars with dull brownish, goldish, speckly colors, it's the very few and far between VIVIDLY toned Peace dollars that are rare and desirable.
One of the reasons that PCGS gave a 67 to that famous 1923-S coin was because of its lovely color IMO. I saw the piece right after it was graded in the late 80's, and the general concensus on that coin was that it was not a 67, but had a great strike for a 23-S and out of this world color for a Peace dollar.
Just to be clear on something.... The IMO AT Peace$ I posted that I owned for a while it was asked of me where it went. It was also mentioned someone bought it on an eBay auction. I want to make it clear this was not my auction. I had people that wanted to buy it from me and also a couple foum members.
But believe this or not I have too much class to have sold it to another collector feeling the way I did about the coin. I sold it back to the seller I bought it from, and felt good that I had enough class not to sell an AT coin to another collector. I'm not flaming the seller it was his to do what he wanted to do with it.
Maybe it should have been taken off the market then.

Not that I know anything about toned Peace $ the coin linked by Lori isn't natural. I've seen literally hundreds of toned Peaces and there aren't any others that have ever toned like that one. I agree with TBT as to its origins.
As for DCAM's coin, that is natural, but either it's been messed with or the pic has been enhanced. There was a large group of toned Peaces that were supposedly stored in newspaper that were all slabbed by NGC a few years back. The coin posted by DCAM as well as the others all have the same # -- 314472-***. I have one and I doubt sincerely that it is AT. If it is, it really is a great job.
As for Stman's old coin, well he's said all that needs to be said and I do agree, it just isn't right, but it sure is pretty. A nice rainbow next to a blast white area, hey wait a minute the same thing that makes it pretty is the same thing that makes it questionable.
There was also a 1924 that sold in the most recent Goldberg auction that was in a NGC holder, purplish in color on the reverse that I would also suspect was ATed, that went for $900 + if my memory is correct.
As for the coin posted by Baseball -- absolutely beautiful and a must have for my collection. Is Art still the owner and does he have a price on that coin?
Eventually, I'll get around to posting pics of some of mine. I really need to start a website. So far I've got more then 20, all with different types of toning.

WHOAH! TBT, so are you saying that the coin in the auction is bogus?

Toned Peace dollar
Oh well.
DCAM - that doesn't look real to me either- whats up with NGC?
I bet it came from the same doctor that was selling them at Long Beach several years ago raw for $39.

No more bogus than this one that I don't own anymore.
This one is graded MS63with the coveted star by NGC
<< <i>Who owns it now? >>
Sorry Dog, you can't con an ex-con. You know who owns it now.

I couldn't agree more, but for the right amount of money, one could buy alot more of the finer things life has to offer.
