Toned nickel...Is this common? Edited with cleaned pics

I just opened a 1982 proof set. The nickel, quarter, and half are all cameo, or Dcam. The mirrors are all blue, but the cameo devices are white. My pics don't do this coin justice. Is this typical?.........Kenimageimage

Looks like haze to me! Did the proof set have a crack in the plastic? I have had some modern proof sets that have been cracked and the Jefferson is toned.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I couldn't find any cracks in the holder. I had to saw one end to crack it apart. Is there any way to remove the haze, if thats what it is?

  • wouldn't a dipping solution remove the haze?

    Jeffersons don't dip well!

  • I agree that is fairly common. The blue haze is nicer than other colors of haze. However people don't like it. The haze clouds the fields so you don't see great mirrors.

Jeffersons with tinted color that doesn't obscure the fields are desirable.

I had NCS remove haze from a nickel, they did a great job. It wouldn't be worth it on a recent Jeff. However it shows that it can be done.

This nickel will dip beautifully with a diluted jeweluster. Just make sure you only dip it for a split second then rinse well in water. On a proof like this, I'd also rinse it with isopropyl alcohol to keep it from spotting. It should take off all the haze and be indistinguisable from an undipped coin.

  • The haze is gone. 3 minute soak in acetone, rinse of isopropyl alcohol, rinse with water, 1 minute soak in Ivory liquid, and a rinse of very hot water...Now is a very Dcam........Thanks guys........Ken
  • Are you going to scan it again? image

I thought the haze was attractive (at least in the scan). If left undipped, would this haze protect or damage the coin?
