How accurate is Heritage Value Index for generic common & semi-common coins?

Specifically Half Dimes, or if you don't follow them (wich most of you don't image ) what do you find for your series?

I'm not talking PQ or rare.. just your basic ms+ coins

    I think what they are trying to tell you with HVI is that if you can get the coin for anywhere in the suggested range they give that you are getting a good buy. Does that make sense? I don't buy a lot from Heritage but I have noticed that most decent stuff usually sells well over the HVI. Of course the more coins of any one kind that sell the more accurate/reliable the HVI.

  • The Heritage index is the average price coins have been bought from their auctions. This is done by series,date, and grade. I find it very helpful when I purchase coins. Funny thing is Heritage usually sells their coins above their own index.image

    How interesting, I just bought a 1853 with arrows H10c in NGC-MS62. It came up with $160-$205.00
    I paid $177 for a nicely toned example. Its an accurate valuation in my book, of course its only one example.

    Is there a value index LIST on the site? or do you just go to a coin denomination and see the index for that particular auction.

    I can't find any heritage value index on their site, i'm thinking it's a DB they have for use in their auctions but i'm hoping i'm wrong

    To be honest, I don't know, I just use the -MY COLLECTION- feature and it automatically pops up with the value next to what I paid for it.

    mrdq -> Heritage Value index

    go to heritage home page
    click on Sell on top 5 page links (it is the 3rd)
    on right column 2nd from bottom Heritage Value Index

    free but need to be registered (so you can bid and get spamimage )

    They have values for grades up to the ultrararities

    I find it is a more accurate price guide than PCGS - does that say much?

    Just go to the Heritage site and click on any current item for auction or sale. Look for the price guide near the middle of the page usually right above the photo. There is a hyperlink for the Heritage Value Index and a dollar range right underneath it.
    In my experience I have rarely if ever seen a Morgan dollar that I was interested in sell within the range given which is why I stated earlier that if you can get the coin within that range you likely got a good buy. I expect if a coin is not bid up into the HVI range then it is considered not sold.
