COIN STORAGE - ARE MINT SEWN BAGS ACCEPTABLE

Hello,

I purchased a few bags (200 coin) of Kennedy halves, they are still sealed in the boxes they were shipped in. I don't plan to sell them for several years, if ever (might just give them to my sons). Is keeping them in their mint sewn bag a good idea for long term storage? I do not want to incur the cost of 1200 airtites and place each coin in their own holder. Any advice out there? Thank you....Arthur

Sure, it's fine. But if you want to keep them in the state they are today then you have to open them up. But keeping it as-is is just fine.

You could always do like Marty does and store them at his Aunt's House image

Seriously, the bags in boxes should be all right as long as they are stored in the proper environment and not moved around at all. The latter comes in to play if you kept them in say an environmentally controlled safe or cabinet but opened and closed the drawer they are stored in - just that in itself will have them rubbing up against each other and affecting grade & quality.

My 2 cents anyway! Good luck, Dave

If cost is your primary concern, you might consider buying plastic
tubes to store them. Clads are not particularly hard to store, but
they can corrode under poor conditions. I've heard a lot of horror
stories about clads left in long term storage.

Ideally they should be stabilized with alcohol or acetone and stored
in a dry location with a minimum of temperature change and vibration.

Leaving them as is will probably be OK for several years except those
in contact with the cloth are at more danger.
