I couldn't grade a Merc if my life depended on it, but that sure is one blazing coin! It almost looks like a matte proof.

I have a 1935 that looks just about like that. They called it AU58--I have studied that coin in every light I can, and still can't find a rub.

My guess is if you are upset with the grade, they did the same thing to you.

    The coin looks top end!

I think it is AG but just to be safe I will call it Fair-2
There now I feel safe that I did not over grade it buy more than 2 points.
Now if I were selling it I might see it different lol

  • My 1795 NGC AU58 Flowing Hair Half Dime is like that! No rub whatsoever, and full unbroken luster! But the powers that be seem to "market grade" some coins more than others. My half dime has the typical weak struck eagle on the reverse, and as i and the previous owner can see no wear, it's the only explaination that makes sense.....NOT!

Either a coin is uncirculated or it's not. Market grading has no place in determining a base "uncirculated" condition opinion. If you then downgrade based on strike or luster characteristics.....so be it. But if the luster is unbroken and there is NO rub....."unc" the coin!

The coin is equal or better than most of my 67's..It came back 64 FB.The worst part is I will send it back, than wait another 60 days, than pay another grading feeimageimage

grip, I agree from the picture it looks great. I just have to guess maybe there is a chance that maybe you missed something? Maybe show it to someone else who you trust for thier opinion because even the best graders can miss something and I am not saying you did miss something. I remember I had this great looking mercury that I was hoping for a 67 on and I showed it to my dad and he spotted an obvious wipe that for some reason I just did not see until he pointed it out and now it stands out like a sore thumb to me every time I look at it. By the way that coin did get a 64. mike

Hmmmm......Merc are one of my "things". The reverse is easily 65, maybe 67. I'd like a better/larger look at that center band, but it sure looks FSB from this view.

The obverse is the issue here. Lots of Mercs have weak obverse strikes. I'd probably only go 62 and I've got a few that are PCGS slabbed as AU or 60 that are sharper than this one.

    Go figure. image

Al are you sure there are no slide marks on her cheek or neck ? If any are showing the dime will get the 64 from PCGS. If it is clean in those two places and the fields you got robbed. Just from the scan my feeling was 66 with shot at 67.

I feel for you, it looks nice from the pic. I bet its some hairlines that did it. Either way even if it had hairlines they should not have beat it up to a 64.

Just looked at a couple of mine, a 66 and a 67. Both have minor slide marks, one on the cheek and the other on the neck, both have super clean fields.

Crack it out and resubmit. Maybe they were out of coffee that day. image

Good luck, I'm curious to see how it comes back to you.

  • Based on a scan, I would guess a 67 without the FB.

Come on guys you plain cannot grade a coin by a scan. No Way, No How. PCGS is really tough on Mercs when it comes to slide marks on the face or neck of Miss Liberty. PCGS may let a slide mark or two slide if they are in the fields but on the neck or face the coin will get MS64 about 95% of the time.

Scans do not show slide marks at all, especially on a dinky coin like a Merc. Al has this coin in hand and knows how to grade these things. If he has taken a second look and finds no slide marks then he got screwed. If he found slide marks the grade is correct for the standard PCGS uses.

I have shown coins on this Forum that were AU, Counterfiet and had other problems and people have stuck grades of upto MS66 on them. I think the best thing is too take a real good look at a coin and then assign a grade if you care too with a disclaimer that the most common problem for coins not meeting a persons expectations is Slide Marks or Gentle Cleaning Marks that are over looked by many collectors and that do not show up on scans here.

Hey Al please respond if you read this.

    Your Buddy.

I just now cracked it,been busy this AM..I have looked at it in three lighting conditions, using three loups....Not a slide mark or a minute tick,it's flawless.Besides being a little flat on top of the T&E in States.

Does it cost anything to have a coin regraded?
If so, why do it? What difference does it make?
If you don't like the grade on the slab, just crack it out.
You still like the coin, right?

    Cool Al.

The flat spot may keep it out of 67 but I doubt it. That is the spot I saw when the reply was made earlier. I knew you had looked at this carefully as you do with all of your mercs. Maybe a quick call to PCGS could save you a couple of dollars on this one.

Sorry, if the scan is accurate, it just does not have that pizazz look of a gem coin.
