Hey, you there by the computer - grade this 1813 Half Dollar

image

The reverse is comparable. I would have attached it, but the only thing I am worse as than computers is cooking. There was this one time in college when I caught my kitchen on fire while making a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, but thats really not relevant here. I'm not making that up though.

Anyway, whats the grade?

I would guess that it's an AU58. As it's been mentioned before; It's impossible to grade a coin solely via an image. Hence my guess.

I can't grade from scans, but that coin looks "mm, mm, good"!

    ummm. . .wow !!

Looks like some wear on the hair under the "Y' (would be helpfull to see the reverse). If that is wear, could be that someone did a great job cleaning it up as well.

    55 or 58

If it ever goes up for sale, please let me know image

Gorgeous coin. My guess would be AU58 if the hair does in fact have some trace of wear. However, if what we're seeing in just the result of a weak strike and no wear exists - bump that up to MS63. Gorgeous natural skin coin!

  • The hair and denticles make it a great AU58. NICE!!image

You see what happened was some of the soup boiled over the top of the pot and started to drip onto the stove top, so I figured I'd just wipe it up so it wouldn't create a huge mess. But the paper towel I was using caught on fire from the cook top and I started to panic, dropping the paper towel onto the rug in front of the sink which immediately went up. In about 3 minutes the whole place was on fire, which I can tell you completely sucked.

You are very funny, John, unless your whole life is filled with these anecdotes, then that would be another story.

However, besides being dipped, I guess the half is a 55 coin. Have a nice holiday.

I don't really collect bust coins but I think this compares to au55 coins I have owned. I don't like the dipped look though even though many do seem to like them white. mike image

    Looks like ms63 to me.
  • I thought this was a fantastic AU58 when I saw it, which is confirmed by the fact that it resides in an ACG MS65 holder.

It doesn't look so much like a die clash as it does a multiple strike.

This looks like O-101 which is listed as an R-4 in Overton. Is it for sale?

I believe one way to tell a circulated coin from one that is uncirculated is by the contact marks. Look a the face and fields and see if there are numerous or very numerous contact marks. These halves were open collar and very well might not be fully struck. Being in an ACG holder would make me very cautious. Basically break it out of its tomb and grade it as if it were raw. If it were raw, I would easily believe it would grade MS-65 at PCGS, way too few contact marks to be circulated. Way too much luster to be anything but a very nice coin.

Please crack it from its tomb.

Stop cooking, and sell me that coinimage.Al
  • Believe me, I stopped cooking a looooooong time ago. In retrospect, I probably should have sued Campbell's for millions, as my 'kitchen endangerment' claim was probably just as valid as the old lady who sued McDonalds after she dumped a cup of hot coffee in her lap and burned herself.

As for the coin, I don't own it. It appeared in a not-too-long ago Early American History auction in the aforementioned ACG holder and brought $3,335. I don't track these prices at all, but I'm guessing thats kind of a 'it might slab as a 4 at PCGS so lets take a punt' price.

The scan makes it look like a monster 13-101 - 63 or 64 (the hair below Y is a typical flat spot on CBHs). If so, it's a CC coin and well worth the 3.4K price.

With the usual disclaimer about grading the scan and not the coin, he are my thoughts:

Attractive coin... it may have been dipped at some point. The lustre is appealing and the strike is above average. The cheeck has some hits that look distracting and keep the coin from a higher grade...MS62.

Looks darn nice to me. Many say it has been dipped, which it probably has, but it sure looks a hell of a lot nicer than most AU bust halves I have seen. Could be the scan, but seems to have mint luster in the protected areas by the stars on the obverse. If AU looks like a 55 or 58, if Unc. it looks to be a 64 at least.
