Southern California and State quarters

I live in San Diego CA and haven't seen any Illinois or Alabama quarters in circulation here. Is this because more change is recycled here or is there another reason? I just got back from a trip to my parents in Gettysburg PA area and found them all over the place. Anyone know why?

  • Dennis - I travel quite a bit and notice that in certain parts of the country you tend to see less variety than others - I think it just depends on the flow of coins through the banking system.

I am in s. Ca. (Palm Springs) and seldom see any state quarters, maybe 1 out of 10 quarters would be of the state variety. I am still missing North Carolina from my "from pocket change" collection... just never got one, haven't seen any of the 2003 issues either!

    What's up with that?

  • I live in San Diego and see them all the time. I'd say 25-40% of the quarters I pull out of my coke machine are state quarters and so far I've saved all varieties that have been issued.

Quit you're whining, here in east central Indiana the Indiana quarters are just now starting to show up, and the pace of the "latest ones" showing up has greatly increased!.

  • I posted this in another forum, but I hoard all D mint Quarters I get in change. I never see and P mints here in Texas so if anyone wants to trade a couple sets let me know!

The distribution of these is largely luck of the draw. The flow of new coin into
a given area is very much determined by economic activity and in tourist areas
this can be seasonal or sporatic. A lack of NC coins in S. CA is likely just chance
as they are, no doubt, circulating there. Quarter location becomes random after
about nine years (6 yr. in circ.), so they're all coming even if they may be some-
what worn when they show up.
