Large discrepencies with a grade

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 21,908 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi,

I know this is probably rare, but what happens if a coin receives two grades that are very far off from each other- say AU55 and XF45 or 40, or maybe MS64 and AU55, where one grader just doesn't see the wear- assume the 3rd grader takes the middle grade.

What would happen? Would it go through the system until two graders agree, or would a few graders look at the coin together and verbally talk about the coin until they can reach a consensus?

    Hi Jeremy,

The biggest grade spreads are usually the coins that are either a 58 or a 62. It's always a matter of rub and where the mint state/non-mint state line is crossed. You'll notice that there aren't many PCGS MS60 and MS61s, but there are quite a few 62s and 58s. In this situation the grading is either two guys at 58 and one at 62, or vice versa. You just don't see a situation where one grader would 60 or 61 that coin.

They other situation you mention...a huge discrepency between grades, would probably be caught by the verifier (always a senior grader, with Ron Howard now doing most of it) and he would look up the grader history and discuss the coin with the graders to make sure everyone was on the same page.
