Well, several of you hit the mark. Bottom line is, I don't know the answer and neither do the grading services. Grading is still subjective.

    I bought it as a ANACS 62RB. It's now a PCGS 63RB. I think it's a 64R. If it ever get's in the "proper holder", will let you know!image

With the usual disclaimer about grading the scan instead of the coin, I would say MS63 RB. It looks as if there is a hit on the cheek that may hold it back from a higher grade. This is one of those coins that needs to be graded in person. There may be some marks in the field, but that could just be the image of the lustre which makes grading this difficult, if not impossible. It is a nice coin and I like it.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • OK Lakes, 1866 tough date, nice coin. No significant marks/spots to knock it down under 64. Pop is only 4 in 66 and its not yours [I cheated and checked]. Doesn't look 66. Most likely 65RD. You seemed surprised at the grade [?]. There may be some slight brown but I can't see that 1866 going RB [unless the image is deceiving]. The feathers look pretty full so I'll stick with 65RD.

Photos are definitely hard to grade - there are some planchet voids on the reverse that don't show well. I arrived at the 64 grade based on the contact marks on the cheek and the planchet voids. The remainder of the coin is great.

Another of the features that attracted me to the coin was a prominent die crack on the reverse. Looks like after another 100 coins, the die would be putting out some nice cuds.
