What is you favorite coin and date?

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
And why? Post a photo too if you have one.

Mine is the 1923 Mercury Dime. The date in the series has a look of no other coin.

When you put it like that, how can I disagree.
I also love the 1916 SLQ.

I have many, but the 1896-O Barber half is tied with the 10 or say other favorite dates I haveimage

I especially like it because it is an O mint, is extremely scarce (Fine or Better)...at least with nice eye appeal and/or in original condition, and in mint state it is second only to the 1904-S. It is pricier in MS grades, but for its scarcity, it is not as expensive in circulated grades.

Just a dam n fine year for coins in general.

Mine is the 1856 Flying eagle cent, though the later FE proofs are a close second.

The 23's are cool but for total strike on the obverse I like the 20P. Of course my favorite in the whole series is the 25P for the way it looks, or does not look compared to the other dates.

27's and 18's are neat looking usually also. Heck I guess they are all neat looking.

I'll third the motion for the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter. Here's one of two I own, a sweet original NGC AU-55, although struck from rusted dies so a little weak on detail. I also have a G-4 in my album.

    1916 Stander

Prices for circulated 1916's above G/VG have really shot up over the past 6 months or so. XF-40 bid is now over what I paid for the AU-55 a couple years ago. image
  • Of the coins I have not owned, my favorite (since I was 8 and in awe of it) was a VF 1916 D Winged Liberty.

Of the coins I have owned, it is a near toss up between my 2001 D MS sac, and my gold proof constitution commem.

The 1880 gold dollar. The type III dollar/$3 gold is my favorite design, and it's neat to be able to have a regular business-strike coin with a mintage of only 1600 pieces at a reasonable price. Several speculators were hoarding the relatively low-mintage gold dollars of the 1880s, so quite a high percentage of the original mintage has survived, most in MS grades.

Hmmm.........A poor boy from Oregon owning one of those. Heck I could buy the whole state for what that coins cost was.

Don't think so.image But I do own this which cost a little bit less.

My favorite is the Indian Head Double Eagle, J-1776, which is my icon, as well. The UHR of AH's is also great. Both by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He kicked off the golded age of US coin design with Weinman, McNeil, Pratt, and Frazier. Truly a great design period.

For me it is a 1799 large cent. I think the story about the search for this date by Joseph Mickley in the early 1800,s if true makes the coin the first collectable and rare coin that started a hobby.

I also like the 1916 SLQ, Some may find it a little Dark, but I love the originality and the photo does not do this coin justice?

My favorite would have to be the pattern 1916 Walking Liberty Half. I saw a photo of one once and was stunned. They ended up moving the lettering around, but I liked it the original way better.
