1989 Score Football Set

I've been sitting on a factory set since they came out and now my mind is almost made up on cracking it and registering it. Does anyone know of any flaws that are common? Would it be worth the chance in breaking it or would I do better to just sell the complete set? What are the average grades that come out of these sealed sets? I'm not going to crack it if PSA 8's are the average. They are the most populous grade for this set. Has anyone attempted to break this set and what were your results?

I've broken one factory set trying to add to my PSA 10 set. The pop report doesn't lie, 10's are incredibly tough. Last I checked, only 1 in 36 came back a 10. The cards I sent in came back about 75% 8's and 25% 9's, i.e. a disaster. The main problems I saw were edge and corner damage. The stock is so soft and every card in the set has a bright border, so any tiny touch is magnified. Centering and surface are both usually pretty good. Since there isn't any PSA 10 in the set that sells over $200 and no PSA 9 that sells over $50, submitting cards yourself seems to be a money-losing proposition.

    Joe,

I was checking out your PSA 10 set and wondered about the comment next to your card #211 Thurman Thomas PSA 10 - "POP 50, none higher". I only collect vintage cards, so maybe I missed the press release regarding PSA grading modern cards higher than PSA 10? image

lol Jeb, that's a comment transferred over from my NFL Rushers set, where I list all of the pops and pop highers, including the 10's for consistency. For some reason the comment is included in all of the sets where that same card is registered. I wish there was a way to fix that.

  • I've always felt the 89 Score set to be a landmark set. That's the one set that started the resurgence in football card collecting. Pro Set came out too and quickly developed a following. Score was scarcer and thus did better value wise. I have a set Registered and have about 300 candidates to be submitted when the next special comes through. I've heard from other collectors though that the few 10's that are available have come from factory sets. Let us know if you decide to register the set.

  • I agree with Fabfrank. The 89 score set is the one to get of any of the late 80's football product. The key rookies are in it. I regret everyday for selling off the one psa 10 I had from the set, a Tim Brown rookie. Probally will peck away and register a set of these soon. The colorful design of these really makes them stand out, but will kill you on grading. Any imperfections really stand out.

Depending on the demand that week, between $150-$250.

Wow, I remember when that card was bringing $1200-$1400. Lot of people took losses there.

    Joe,
Looks like you just crushed on some serious PSA 10 action in this set. I just saw where your PSA 10 set rocked to the top of the charts, with to many to count psa 10 being added. Very nice. NHLfightguy

    Shock,

I opened a couple factory sets and notice that some of the red cards were OC. Other then that I did not see any other factory flaws.

Thanks fightguy. I got an unsolicited offer from a dealer for 69 PSA 10's, and fortunately we were able to agree on a price. I don't think I'm going to be #1 for long though image

  • Carlos,
AWESOME SET!!! I've thought about doing that set but decided to keep working on the 85 set instead. Congrats, that's a great set!!

  • You were right Joe. Carkim just came through like a bradley tank and blew everybody away in the 1989 score football game. I like it when out of nowhere somebody comes in and steals the show, even though you were tipped off.

See, I told you I wouldn't be #1 for long image. Nice set Carlos, did you submit an entire set at once?

  • Congrats Carlos. I thought I would have been first to complete this set, but got sidetracked by my philly football sets. Will you be looking to upgrade?

    Frank,

I'm not sure what I want to do with this set. I have another raw factory set that I was going to go through but, I may just hold on to it for awhile. I'm still persueing my 1972 Football, and I don't want to get caught up full time in another set. I may just dabble a little with the 1989 Score.

    Alan,

    Yes I did.

    Carlos,

Why did you decide to sell? You're not even going to wait to get that nice certificate in November? image I'm sure you wouldn't have much competition in the next 4 months. Good luck with the auction. I'll keep an eye on it.

Oh yeah, if someone here wins the set, keep this thread going ... it's up to almost 3 months already. image

  • What's up Carlos? Selling so soon. I hope everything is going well. I'll be keeping an eye on the set. If you decide to break it up, LMK.
