There are approx 155 Half Dimes, I have 23. How do I find a dealer to fill my want list?

I live in a semi-remote area of Michigan. I'm in the restaurant business not the coin business. I am lucky to attend 2 major shows a year. I've purchased most of my coins from Heritage, some from eBay, some from these boards.

Higashiyama's thread made me think about never (or rarely) buying internet coins for this series but how does someone as removed as I am complete the set? I would NOT have purchased the keys without seeing them but there are still a hundred or so "common" coins valued between $300 and $1,000 or so that I want and will not be able to find at my local pawn shop.

Any volunteers? I don't forsee being able to realistically attend more shows

If the general concensus from the high end people like Laura, Dragon, Adrian, etc.. is that over the long run you'll do much better paying someone a commission to look at them first hand i'd LOVE to begin a relationship like that with someone and develop over the next 5 years or so an outstanding Half Dime series.

PM me, phone me, email me, snailmail me and maybe we can "do business" image

or reply here and tell me i'm nuts if that's the case image

I think the publishers of the graysheet compile a list of dealers and thier specialties.

I also collect half dimes, but only capped bust and seated liberty. I'm about 2/3 finished, but need the war years. I just bought a really cool PCGS 1843 MS-63 half dime. My date/mint set of half dimes are low grade circulated/cleaned examples. EVillageProwler has a nice 1800 Libekty for sale in PCGS F-15.

I have an extra 1844-O in an ANACS Fine Details Net VG-8 Scratched Small O I'd be will to let go for a song.

  • Hi mrdq. I collect Half Dimes and I can tell you that many dealers know surprisingly little about them. In general, there usually is not a large selection of great half dimes at "coin shows." So, the fact that you don't attend many large coin shows does not automatically exclude you from the universe of half dimes.

If you are serious about building a set of half dimes - a tremendous undertaking - it would be prudent for you to study, study, study the Series first. You MUST come to know the dates, the prices, the grading, populations, varieties and the availabilities within your OWN mind. Your wisdom of half dimes must exceed that of the dealers. If you find such an undertaking to be too time consuming, laborious or boring, then you run a great risk of becoming yesterdays chop suey for Sellers who will take advantage of you. An educated consumer is a WISE consumer.

Will you build a set of "Seated Half Dimes" ONLY or will you build the "mega set" of all Half Dimes (Early, Bust, and Seated)?

Working towards building a set of half dimes is a tremendously educational experience. But keep in mind that it is MUCH harder to SELL a coin than it is to buy one. Consider this after reading all the hype about "hot markets" that are only hot when you are buying and always COLD (or even non-existent) when you are selling. GOOD LUCK mrdq. image

My investments are in Franchise restaurants, my hobby is collecting coins so selling them any time in the next 20 years isn't on my mind.

Even the ones who publish in LSCC and claim to be "seated experts" sell garbage.. I had 3 BB's from a nationally renouned dealer image that was MY "Live and learn" burn.

dq - you left out some info on your request

what grade are you looking for - some hours on eBay and yahoo can find you many good examples for less than $15 delivered,

if you want MS63 or MS 65 or better, and only PCGS certified than tougher.

One dealer nearby on CCE or maybe Eureka could probably fill you up at your speed of spending $$$$

Half dimes can be tough to locate. A lot of dealers don't dabble in them because they can be slow movers.
So you end up waiting for larger auctions to find better pieces.
I wish you would have emailed me on the 63-s I listed on Ebay a month or so ago. I didn't realize you were the first bidder, and would have gladly sold that coin to you off Ebay. It was a very attractive coin for that tougher date.
I couldn't punch up Higashiyama's thread, but buying over the internet is similar to buying anywhere, there's good and bad, it's a matter of sifting through it all.

Brian Greer does the early stuff including seated 1/2 dimes. He is a contributer to NN Coin Market price guide. He is also a frequent advertiser in tat same publication.

Don't know of a web site or e-mail address for him.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
