Friday Evening Post: Numismatic hot-foot!!

George Carlin used to mention the term "Mental Hot Foot" in his act and then go off on a rant about stuff like flesh-colored-crayons or blue-food. The term seems to apply at this forum. There's always someone ready to step in and get all worked up about one aspect of the hobby or another. If it isn't the great AT debate or some eBay auction hi-jinx, well, it's something. Geez, I even feel the rush of adrenalin every so often. The topic shows up that I make the mistake of reading and I feel my temple start to thump and my blood pressure rise as I struggle to tap away at the right keys.
Today I felt my feet warming up when I read a post that mentioned the Virginia lobby and the apparent lack of interest in the way they've hijacked the 5 cent design. I did what I could a few months back and went to a link, sent an e-mail to my representatives. I got the form letter reply and the legislation marches on to continue a design who's time has passed. Don't get me wrong, I like Jefferson nickels but it's time for a redesign. The idea of legislators wasting there time on the issue is maddening. Besides, if they don't discontinue the series, how is my hoard ever gonna appreciate??
Anyway, what gets you cranked up in the hobby? What just aggravates the crap outa you till you wanna reach into the monitor and choke someone? Like a Congressman or an eBay seller who can't operate a camera or use spellcheck. I know there's something so fess up.

I don't like folks that don't remember that they're actually communicating to other humans when they're posting to threads, and don't treat others with respect and kindness. Criticism is best delivered with an open hand than with a hammer.
I don't like folks (fortunately, so very few here) who hold themselves higher because of the type of coins they collect or sell. I like what I like, and I like to groove on reading what people write about their favorites. What's so hard about that?

Franky collectors..... bebopalula!
Ok, just kidding! I meant to say Kennedy collectors! Bwahahahahahahaha!
The pervasive idea that "bid" is the market. I've been on a major league crusade for seven years. Does that qualify as being "cranked up"?
Doggedly collecting coins of the Central American Republic.

E-Bay's absolute refusal to do anything about the scammers

Hey now Tradedude!!! How could you not love this face!
..........I collect more than Frankies. I have a complete set of Lincolns, and am now working on both Frankies and Kennedys. Collecting is very diversified and I usually look at all of the pictures posted. There are some coins that I would not collect due to the fact that I do not care for them or could not afford them..............Ken
The fact that the Greysheet is the number one price guide for the hobby/business, and they STILL list NCI, INS and PCI slabbed coin percentage values in their Coin Dealer Newsletter Certified Coin Market Indicator. Talk about being out of touch. Makes one think that if there were ANY type of legitimate price guide competition, this paper would fold up in a heatbeat. Never mind 63, 64 rb IHC's, and Lincolns (other copper pieces too!) Mintstate 66+ coins. Their are plenty of examples/price history, documented sales to establish set pricing for coins like this. How about PL Morgans? It's rather silly that some basic pricing guidelines can't be established, worthy of publication. There's a lot more, but I think one can get the point.
That's it for now.......I have to find some Tylenol for the temple thumping pressure.

Ebay Stuff
Well. Maybe one thing. When I'm in a coin shop and a kid or a little old lady
comes in and asks about state quarters and the proprietor finds the need to
use the word "cladcrap".
There may be a few other things too, but generally I work very hard to stay calm.
"Forum member X ripped me off on Ebay! The toning on his coin is pure corrosion, it's in a second rate NGC slab, plus it's a modern piece of junk only the Registry could love. Why did I listen to the advice I asked from all the so-called experts here?"
My personal hot-foot is when someone makes a definitive statement about a series they have only a casual knowledge of, showing no examples, reference or disclaimer that they may be talking out their wind tunnel.
hey paul
that is a good one. one of the benefits of this forum is the varied collector and dealer knowledge of particular series'. i just sent a message to a member regarding a specialty area that i need help on and i'm heading back to the local shop with my VAM book to look at a bunch of 1878 morgans. since i've been on-board the point you make has been highlighted several times and i've learned how much i don't know.
