1967 SMS Deep Cameo 50c

Anybody here surprised to see a coin of this quality

1967 SMS

residing in this holder?? image

I know there have been some threads about this TruGrade, but I haven't seen anything about ownership. Anyone know who is behind the company?

I've really been surprised to find what appear to be quality coins in their holders lately.

While not an evaluation of this service or this coin, but is there not the possibility that this coin has been played with and that is why it is in a trugrade holder?

I hear the same question echoing throughout the forum!
  • I have seen about 2 dozen Trugrade slabs at a shop in town. On the average they are overgraded by at least 2 points. The owner used to be a grader for........are you ready.......ACG....Ken

Has this seller been declared a crook? I hadn't read anything about him. What gives? image

Hard to tell but the scan makes it look at least a DCam-66. The Cameo
isn't spectacular for a 1967 but it's certainly good enough.

My post was not to question the coin, the company, or the seller. Merely to suggest an alternate possible reason why a SMS DC coin might be in this holder. Which is, basically, until you see it in person you cannot know for sure whether it is artificially frosted, reproofed, or totally on the up and up.

at a recent small show, 20-30 dealers, i watched a collector walk the floor with a briefcase containing at least 100 TruGrade coins. i spoke with him briefly and he said he had submitted 25 coins for $100 and he was trying to sell them. he made the rounds from dealer-to-dealer and from what i saw none were sold.

i think that for a new service to make headway in the slabbed coin market today, they would need to grade quite conservatively, to the point of undergrading just to gain a market share. why does it seem that the approach is just the opposite----flood the market with overgraded problems??

  • I guess take the money before people new to the market wise up. When you go out of business just create another slab factory and take more money from more people! image

  • I had this auction on my watch list the whole time it was running. The coin looks decent and I would love to add a Dcam to my set, but I ended up never bidding. Chicken or cautious?image

If I were to ever buy an off brand slabbed coin like this, I would have to hold it in my hand first.

It's possible that the frosting is fake.

And I think my post here, which you alluded to in another thread, demonstrates that I didn't care who the seller is or what they were selling.
  • no, the frosting is not fake so for anyone who did not bid on it because it was in a TRUGRADE holder lost out on a great deal that would have cost thousands in a pcgs or ngc holder. and yes i sell trugrade coins, and for that matter, i sell coins in any holder that i can make a profit on. thanks for noticing my auctions.!!
  • Supracoin welcome to the forum.Hope to see some pcgs coins.image

If a new service came out and graded so conservatively they were seen to undergrade, who would submit to them?? A lower grade from an off name brand grading company. Why send your nice coins there?
