How important are rim dings to you?

When making a decision to buy a coin, how important are rim dings? Being the "old time grumpy tech grader" that I am.... I thought I would make a point to at least newbies to be sure and check the rim. I was always told to check the rim First then the rest of the coin. I try to still do this, but it slips my mind once in a while.
But before making my final look to buy, I go around and look at the rim on both sides of the coin. I'm sure plenty of us have bought a coin we thought had passed our inspection only to get it home and find a rim ding we didn't check for.
I decided to post this thread as I see we all check for hits, strike, luster etc. etc., but I don't see the rim dings brought up often enough. How much do you think these affect the overall grade of a coin, or eye-appeal?

It completely depends on the coin. When buying matte proof gold, nothing could be more offensive. When buying pioneer gold in XF/AU, it's no big deal.

I would usually pass on a rim damaged coin, no matter how rare a piece
