Stunning 1795 Flowing Hair Half with great album toning

just wanted to share. Some people saw this coin before I imaged it and stated they think it is AT but I can tell you in person makes all the difference. It is obvious to me it is album toned and not artifical. A real beauty!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but that has got to be one of the "Fugliest Coins" I have seen in my lifetime! I realize I will be flamed by all the classic people on the forum but, What is up with Liberty's eye??? It looks like someone slapped a frog's eye on your coin. And as for the "eagle" on the reverse; looks more like a scraggle hawk with it's neck wrung. I do have to thank you for posting a picture of the coin. It reminds me why I prefer modern coins to the "beautiful, wonderous classics".

That's why the design lasted such a short time... especially with the complaints about the emaciated eagle. I happen to think the coin is almost symbolic of the simpler way of life in that time, and you can see how Liberty evolved with our coinage through the years. That piece is full of history, and truly a coin to treasure.

hugh: what grade would you give it and price?
I hope that you recall my previous comments... I stand by them but also think I can add to them. I should say that my comments are based on the scan you have posted. I still think the coin may have had an old cleaning, perhaps 60-75 yrs ago, but the toning is natural and from an album. This scan seems to confirm that is a definite probability. I still think an old cleaning is possible based upon the toning, especially around the stars. I still stand by my grade opinion of VF 25 to VF 30 that most considered liberal and perhaps still do.
I like the coin and I think you should consider yourself fortunate to own it. I had a feeling that the previous scan did not do the coin justice and your scan seems to reflect that attempting to grade and even buy coins based on scans can be a difficult proposition.
Claus:
Just remember the coin is 208 years old... it may not have the appeal of coins of Austria or the German States, but it is still a stunning piece of history that any serious collector would hold as a true prize. I collect both European and US coins and just appreciate the coins for what they are.

That said, it is still a beautiful coin.

I agree.
That has got to be one of the ugliest eagles I have ever seen on a coin!
I'd say VF30 & $3800

Hi Claus. It is true that the reverse eagle on this Early coin was "thin" - but so was Bruce Lee! Both are examples of extreme warrior skill in a lithe package. That "thin and fit eagle" represents America in her flower (before McDonalds). I love it! To me, the "frogs eye" of Liberty looks more like the WIDE EYE of wisdom and the bright eyed wonder of the future that glorious America was about to embark upon (under the watchful and protective EYE of the ALMIGHTY Creator).

Why did you sell the coin?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
That is about the only thing you can say with certainty about that coin is it has been cleaned, it is not possible for a coin to attain that overall appearance (bright center) and toning without being cleaned first. I have seen hundreds of old Busties with that look in all the designs (Flowing Hair, Draped Bust and Capped Bust) over the years and 100% of them have been cleaned, dipped or wiped before they were put into the album.
And you recieved your chemical and other engineering degrees from which notworthy university?

I agree with coincat that it was probably cleaned up a long time back and has been toning in an album or in sulfar rich paper to be able to pick up that neat looking colored toning. Nonetheless it is a beautiful coin and it competely crushes the modern looking coins with their staid designs and lower relief details meant for mass production. I am talking post SLQuarters, Mercs, and WL halves.
And you can be sure that it is a coin that will always be scarce and highly desireable until the world ends.
