Wife factor

How does having a wife affect your collecting habits?

My wife is supportive of my collecting - unless I get out of hand with to many winning bids. You know, when large quanties of cards you need become available on EBAY or that high-end low pop special card finally become listed. We have four children, so card collecting can definitely cause havoc with a budget.

I include her on the decision making process on any major purchase. This policy has worked out well so far, she will often work with me on a compromise. This will sometimes include the sale of a card or two to help finance the new purchase. Anyway, this was never an issue until online auctions and the PSA Set Registry - when graded commons and rare singles came into play.

I posted this because of the recent scattered posts regarding how we all sometimes hide purchases from the "better half". image

But to answer your question, my wife is pretty supportive. She knows down deep that building sets off ebay etc is what I enjoy doing, so as much as I make fun of her, she is overall pretty supportive.

I just don't bother showing her the cards. She could care less that, a card in the case of my 1911 collection, is 90+ years old or not. But then again I really could care less about the new shoes she bought. So it all works out.

Thats why having these boards is so great. Its like when I was a kid and could talk about cards and trade them with buddies. Here we can do those things 24 hours a day if we want....and we don't have to worry about making that one last trade before our mom comes and pick us up. image

Although I mention that my wife, (like others) is much more preoccupied by the value of cards than their intinsic value or collectors aspect - I have to admit that she's pretty good about not bugging me too much on it. She's frugal by nature and would prefer to see $10,000 in the bank than $10,000 worth of cards. So, for the last 4 years, there's been some give and take as I make the case that I'm not "throwing money out the window". She's come around quite a bit.

I consult her before I plunk down a $4000 bid on a set, and that consultation usually comes with a plan outlining what the cost will be after buying, grading and selling off the leftovers when I'm done.

Its made much easier by the fact that we already own three houses and we both bring in pretty nice salaries without any kids.

I basically need to ask my wife (June 1 will be official) for all purchases over a few hundred dollars. She usually agrees, then asks what am I going to get rid of as I am always over my monthly budget. I tell her I am going to get rid of the Mays, for example, and she smiles because I have gotten rid of that card several times over ...

I have a feeling that June 2 is going to change my collecting efforts dramatically ....

Gemmint man - I am sure since you have things so well in hand you have no objections if we foward these quotes to the Mrs...image

I am lucky in the fact that I have almost paid off my mortgage and nearly finnished saving for my kids college (they are 2 and 4) and we both work in very well paying jobs...

My wife is generally supportive of my card collecting habits, and we kind of have evolved into a don't ask don't tell type of arangement...
As long as I pay my share of the bills, put some money in the kids savings accounts, and continue to add to our investments things are generally fine...

However she will comment when I am in a heavy buying mode about all the buble envelopes we receive in the mail and the fact that she has not bought anything for herself in months... But thankfully most nights I am home before her and she never sees the envelopes....

gemmint, I do need some advice but I also need a new fence, an addition to the driveway, a new roof next year ... and I am constantly reminded of that.

I could not ask for a better mate when it comes to supporting my habit though. She attends shows with me, has a great eye for aesthetics of cards, and gets pretty happy if I get some Rose cards I need.

I hate to admit it, but she is not a big fan of the 70 Kelloggs set I started last year. She is starting to appreciate the set - slowly.

My wife was much better with the my purchases after seeing that I could at least get my money back, or profit, on any cards that I would sell. I travel with my job so I have to much access to EBAY, Teletrade and other online auctions.

Reading this forum, which led me to switch from modern to vintage collecting, has enlightened me to the fact that I can collect and have an investment at the same time. It is hard to go wrong with low population cards and the beauty of vintage items has truly enhanced my collecting experience.

My wife now enjoys that same aspect of my collecting and often asks for frequent updates on my individual set's progress. She looks upon certain cards as a form of art, especially the ones with water colored backgrounds and images. Maybe because I am building sets she sees this more as a task that needs to be completed vs. purchasing the next rookie card.

I guess that it is nice that she takes interest in my hobby. The way I read some posts now, some women get card collecting but still do not understand our fascination with watching sporting events?

Luxury, you mean you don't have her open the packages and lay out the cards for you by the time you get home (along with your slippers and cigar/pipe)? What's that like?
  • I attempt to keep purchases equitable. For instance, if I but something for $1,000, then she buys something for $1,000, etc. Thus, if I want something for about $500, then that means it will impact the family budget by about $1,000. This works fairly well. The national is an event that I plan on each year. We agree on a budget for that event well in advance and she equalizes it throughout the year in items or travels that interest her.

Christmas is particularly rough because the holiday expenses go through the roof. In addition, dealers and collectors come out with bulk sales during this period even though competitive prices are difficult to be had (I still don't understand this phenomenon?). Unfortunately, I am limited in taking advantage of many bargains during this time due to the "doubling effect" on my family budget.

As many of you know, I built up a very nice 1951 Bowman set (as well as 1949 Bowman, 1949 Bowman PCL and 1939 Play Ball along the way). After the completion of the liquidation, resulting in a new Toyota Sequoia (cash) for my wife as well as new windows, house painting and landscaping, I informed my wife where the money came from. She was pleased, but wanted to know why I never told her. I said, "Honey, if I had lost $10,000 doing this what would your reaction have been?" When she replied that she would have been pretty upset, I said, "That's why I'm only telling you now."
  • As long as I was showing a profit (from the cards I'd buy and sell), she was fine with it....

Now that I'm in the market for buying a house, I've managed to sell over 250 PSA cards in the past 3 months. Rick at MINTState just sold over 100 for me and is selling a few of my PSA 10s on eBay as we speak... though I'm a power seller myself, all this home buying stuff is taking all my time (I can only sneak peeks at this board during work every so often - no more time once I get home) image

She's lovin all the money that's comin in... I'm a little sad to see it all go, but I'm surprised how easily I'm getting over it...

I *STILL* have my 73 T Reprint set ('53s).... anyone interested at all before I go to ebay?!

My wife collected hockey cards before we met so she is usually understanding of most purchases. If we go to a show together it is easy because she usually looks for C56's and 51-52's for OUR sets. However, when she sees I am bidding on a Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain rookie she asks a few questions.

  • I've always kept my collecting habits well hidden from my wife. Early on, she made it clear that she didn't appreciate spending our hard earned cash on crappy old cardboard left over from a previous generation. So I've gone underground with my habit.

NOW, COME TO FIND OUT, SHE'S BEEN LIQUIDATING MY COLLECTION OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS USING MY EBAY ID!!!!!!

Nearly all of my beloved cards have been sold on ebay without my knowledge. I'm in the process of compiling a complete list of ebay transactions (Peg at ebay and their attorneys have been very helpful so far).

For anyone that has purchased an item from me, it will be coming back to me much sooner than you think. One of your local constables will soon be delivering a summons for you to appear in court and bring the card(s) with you.

  • MB...

That was great! I was in our den laughing my head off, who pop's her cute head in with a, what's so funny?

I read it to her and what do you think she said? "Is that true". I could see her thinking (I could do that). I'm going back underground!

Wife Factor... We have a joint checking account. We have seperate credit card accounts. I don't open her mail and she doesn't open mine.
I have a personal checking account in my name only=ebay=buying from dealers. Different bank than our joint account.

We built a house together, buy cars together, vacation together. We've had three children together. We trust each other completely.
I have my hobby and she has her's (shopping in Boston with our teenage daughter). She does all the joint utility, mortagage and all other bills. I pay my credit cards and she pay's her's. I've never (in over 2 decades) had someone call or send a notice for an unpaid bill.

I do my thing, she does her thing and we meet each other in the middle....very simple, I think...

Her only concern is. What do I do with all these cards if you have an accident or a heart attack...(answer) email Toppsgun & Buckwheat.

  • Moto,

Buckwheat???? He's #1. I'm #10 and a poor showing at that. I need your cards more than Buckwheat does!!! Ask your wife what would she rather have in case of your premature demise? A ton of money (Buckwheat) or a good, loving home (Toppsgun) for your '61 set?

On second thought, don't ask her. Just put me in your will.
