Independent evaluation of 70 material?

As more and more 70 material comes out, what do you think about an group studying and evaluating the quality of these 70’s material?

In there evaluation, the group would come up with objective guidelines for why PCGS or NGC placed these coins in a 70 holder. Then produce a document showing the similarities and contrasts between the two main grading services and provide new guidelines for both services to use for future 70 material.

We would like to be part of this group. If you would let to part as well, PM or Email me.

Okay, suppose you find that the 70s arent 70s... then what? Do you check the 69s and the 68s and go down the line?? A more important thing to do is to teach the coin collecting public that grading standards will vary among third party grading companies, that they should be aware of what they buy and inspect what they buy, and (as we all have heard over and over) buy the coin and not the holder. cheers, alan mendelson

Unless you're willing to liberate the coins from the slabs, all 70s and high end 69s will look the same.

  • Steve27 - One does not have to remove the coin from the holder to examine the characteristics of the coin - I would suggest.

I think it would be interesting to see what was found. I purchased one PR70 just to have a 70 for comparison reasons, and I don't get why people are willing to pay any more for a 70 than a 69. To me it looks like buying plastic. I don't see purchasing any additional 70 coins, but if one showed up in one of my submissions to PCGS that would be okay.image

    Todd:
Excellent thread. The PCGS/NGC 70s that I have made and have evaluated have literally been perfect except for very few examples that are premium 69s. The criteria for a 70 is simple. The coin needs to be perfect and noticably superior in strike , luster , and eye appeal. I think you would find that 95/100 70s that are in PCGS/NGC holders meet that criteria.

ms-70 is supposed to mean 1 simple thing: a perfect coin.

nothing can be perfect, therefore, the grade cannot be achieved. for me, any coin slabed as ms-70 is automatically & unreservedly overgraded.

you don't need a more independent evaluation than that
