Coins from my misspent youth...

RYKRYK Posts: 35,798 ✭✭✭✭✭
Several years ago when I was an "unguided missile" with a smaller coin budget and no books on bust halves or dealer guidance, I picked up these two bust halves on ebay. Now, I still have no books on bust halves nor much interest in pursuing them as a collecting pursuit. Are these worth slabbing? How likely are they AT? Should I try to sell them? Is there a market for them? Should I throw them into my safe and forget about them?

(P.S. There are several more draped and capped bust and seated halves where these came from)

They aren't AT... the gray is very natural for silver of that era... I love that color, personally.

RYK, I would not slab those coins. It's hard to tell without seeing them in person, but I doubt that the 1811 would slab at PCGS. It looks polished and retoned. The 1828 looks a bit better, but it's value is real close to your total slabbing costs, so why bother. I would just hold on to these puppies and let them be a constant reminder of how important it is to buy the book before the coin AND to be careful about buying raw coins from total strangers on a sight unseen basis.

BTW, I have many very similar mistakes, only not from ebay. I plan to sell them in 2054, at which time, according to my calculations, I will probably break even and recover my costs. image
