Awesome coin. I know I've seen it before, somewhere...

Those 1913 German pattern coins are awesome. I have been looking for a nice affordable one myself.

Here's mine...the photo doesn't do it justice and it is nearly as red as the example.

There is another. Looks more like a red-blue-purple than the assigned RB designation. There are some very cool Darkside coins up for auction this week by this seller. We now return you to your regularly scheduled lightside programming.

Anybody want to share what kind of money these usually go for? I don't have any darkside price sheets. Start with a nice white example price and then throw in your impressions of one with monster toning......

Slammer, the Krause catalog generally only lists one Uncirculated price and one Proof price. Sheldon-style numerical grades are not really used much on world coins. (I use them in my dealer inventory, simply because I sell a lot of U.S. stuff and want to be consistent, so as to avoid confusing anyone). Generally speaking, a generic Krause UNC or Proof price is for an "average quality" coin up to 62 or so. In 63 and higher grades, coins can fetch a premium over the Krause price. In the case of an awesome coin like the one this post is about, you can throw out the Krause. Throw out all common sense while you're at it, 'cause bidding on something like that goes beyond all normal "sane" considerations. The price will be set by the auction, and whatever somebody's willing to pay (which is likely to be a goodly chunk of change, though still nowhere near what a comparable United States coin would fetch).

This exception to the rule notwithstanding, there are a lot of "eye candy" Darkside coins that are a real bargain, and can be had for surprisingly cheap prices.

(I don't have my Krause handy, so I can't tell you what the standard proof price is on that coin.)

I would really be surprised, if not schockedimage, if the colors on this coin turned out to be as pictured. I apologize to "GreatToning" in advance if the coin is actualy as pictured but I have never seen "oriental rug red" toning in a coin.

The colors on the holder, especially the label look right to me, so I suspect that it's a fairly accurate image.

The first should go for over $400, not allowing for the toning. (It's very hard to predict with world coins -- sometimes it moves the price, sometimes it doesn't.) The second one should do at least $250, probably over $300. Too bad the seller doesn't know he's offering Goetz patterns ... collectors of German coins and medals often scan on that name, so he'll probably miss some of the stronger bidders.
