Need help with first registry set

Over the past few weeks I have been working on getting my Steve Garvey set on the PSA registry. I have received a few emails from BJ Searls, but I don't understand exactly what she is instructing me to do. What needs to be done for my set to make the registry? I have already entered the serial numbers into the site.

Here is what she had said:

"The cards that go into the basic set are only mainstream cards, non-league leader cards or special cards. Take a look at the George Brett basic set as an example. Cards graded PSA 8 should be your guide. For example, if the card isn't even listed you know it should have weight of 1. If it's listed for $50 it may have a weight of 2. If it's listed at $500 it may have a weight of 8.

Please bold the cards that should be in the basic set only and weight the set. Weighting is a 1-10 scale using the SMR pricing for PSA 8's."

Well, I have the SMR, but most Garvey cards are not listed. Furthermore, I haven't the first clue about what she means for me to do. She sent me an Excel spreadsheet with the cards listed, but I don't know where to go from there. Any advice from you more seasoned registry experts?

Thanks!

Welcome to the registry! You will get all of the help you need on this and other topics.

BJ is great to work with and is very helpful. The 1971 and 1972 Garvey would most likely have a weight of 8 each, as they are most likely the toughest to find in high grade. Then just work the list. If a particular Garvey is fairly easy to find in high grade, weight the card a 1. If it somewhat tough, give it a 2, and so on.

    Good luck.

Even though I wouldn't personally consider Garvey a common, for sets where he is not listed, use the common pricing for PSA 8's. For example, 1978 Topps singles in PSA 8 are valued at $6. A 1980 Topps single in PSA 8 is valued at $3. For sets where singles are not listed use the lowest value star (listed) card and take off a dollar or two. Therefore, giving you a 3-2-1 weighting for the examples I used.

This is by no means the rule, but maybe it will give you a start.

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
  • I just did a quick scan through the March SMR, and found Garvey listed for every year up through 75, I also did a Pop report search for him to find all of the cards that they show for every year that he played. Comparring the two will give you a good feel of where to go for weighting.

but again BJ is easy to get along with and is more than willing to submit alternative weighting schemes to Joe O. for review and approval (I did so on the 81 Reds Team Set, and will make similar suggestions for other Reds Team sets in the future).
