Years ago, a bunch of these were scattered on the streets by an overzealous fire department. (Yes, really.) They're probably worth about $1000-1500 a pop these days. I handled a small group about five years ago. They're not rare, but they are VERY cool!

Edited to say that they are NOT legal tender! image

The WWW is frustrating me, but the info is definitely out there. There are hundreds of these notes in existence. They are very cool and they all come from the same place. There was a fire at a government building. I'm not sure if it was the Treasury building. Firemen threw bundles of paper out the windows to slow the fire. The crowds watching the scene were VERY pleased and walked away with many "souvenirs". Technically, the notes can probably be seized as stolen property. I don't know if it has ever happened. I do know that the notes are all cancelled, so it's probably not a high priority for the Treasury.

They were thrown out the window by firemen in Washington, DC, in, I believe the Post Office, in the 1930's. They are technically illegal to own, but are highly collectible and prized by all that do own them. Over the years, I have probably had the opportunity to purchase nearly 500 of these, because of my location in suburban Washington DC. Hope this helps.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

  • Straight from the Krause and Lemke book "Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money":

All outstanding 1900 $10,000 Gold Certificates are the result of a 1935 fire in a Treasury storage area in Washington, D.C. While fighting the fire, a quantity of these redeemed and cancelled notes was thrown out into the street, where the notes where picked up by passers-by. They have no redemption value, though they sometimes sell in the paper money hobby in the $400-$750 range."

I tend to agree with Andy regarding the value: over $1000 each, depending on condition.
