Take a look at this 71-CC dime. Something ain't right.
First, there shouldn't be a die crack throught the MM. It didn't develop until mid '72. Second the MM just doesn't look right. The position of the left C seems OK, but the right C is a little too far to the right.
Definite fake? Any ideas how it was done?

but he's right that your going to have to wait awhile to see another.
I would pass on this one.

Maybe he can send you a scan of the reeding next to a Philly dime?
You are correct sir! According to Greer, the same reverse was used for all the 71-74 CC dimes; but the die crack will never appear on 71's, will only appear on some 72's, and will always appear on the 73's and 74's.
Therefore, his dime is obviously not original. He may either have an altered coin or he may have scanned the reverse of a different coin. This is why these often-altered dates need to be in a holder for most collectors.
You probably know better than me, but again; the wider reeding is much more difficult to alter than the MM.
So, are you ready to upgrade any of those CC dimes of yours and send the old one's my way?

Actually, I had no plans to bid on it. I was just browsing the listings (still looking for VF/XF 1866 and 1875-S upgrades for my set) and came across it, and whenever I see a non-slabbed key I take a closer look to see why.
JD - I have seen a cast counterfeit 73-CC. I owned it for a few weeks. Very convincing, too. Fooled the ANACS verbal opinion grader at a show. Only came back BBed as cast counterfeit after the official submission to ANACS.
