Do YOU think the story that says these coins were minted from silver from George Washington's personal silverware is true? Does anyone know anything about a hoard of these existing?.......John J. Pittman had one from the hoard.

BIllJones please post a picture of your coin again, and anyone else post a picture and comments on America's "first" coin........

There is no evidence to support the story about the silverware.

There is some support for the story. Dr. Jonas McClintock wrote of a conversation with Adam Eckfeldt, noting that Eckfeldt said Washington deposited $100 in bullion or specie for the purpose of coining the half dismes. The Mint records do show a deposit from Washington. Now, whether that was his silverware is open to question.

Evidence or not, the silverware legend is a great story.

  • It`s also said that he ( George Washington ) donated pots and pans because of it`s copper content for the Half Cents. Again, as lordmarcovan pointed out, probibly legend and serves as a good story.
