How do you safely remove the haze that forms on modern commeratives, including milk spots?

Milkspots, I have never heard of a way to remove them.

I usually dilute it 50:50 with distilled water, and rinse thoroughly with cold running water. Works great on silver and nickel, and removes minor/faint milk spots. I have been told, however, that it is NOT wise to use on copper. (Frankly, I've never had the guts to try it and see what happens.)
WARNING: Use only in a well ventilated area... ammonia fumes are dangerous.
