Lincoln experts -- price advice on early Lincoln proofs

I am looking for a matte proof Lincoln for my US type set.

In the current market, what is a plausible price range for a solid PR66 RD?

In looking for a type coin, are there any obvious dates to look for?

Thanks!

    Higashiyama ,

I think your best bet for a "type coin" in this series, based upon a combination of the PCGS population and actual availability (these are not always necessarily the same thing), would be a 1909.

A ball park retail figure would be $3000. Many examples of this type, even PR66RD ones, have spots or carbon flecks and/or stains and/or mellowing of the original "mint red" color, among other problems. It is extremely difficult to find a really nice one of ANY date in PR66RD.
  • Since you guys look like you know what your talking about, perhaps I could ask a question... I have a ton of 1958,59, 60 and 44 proof cents, but they all look like crap...no decent strike or anything appealling...are they worth slabbing.. Sorry didnt mean to pinch your thread.image
  • If you want a pr66 rd then 1909 is probably your best bet, you could probably score one for under $2900, If your looking to save money I highly suggest you take a look at purchasing r/b or brown proofs. A 1909 pr in brown will only cost you about 7 or 8 hundred.
