What's the one most amazing coin you've ever seen?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,332 ✭✭✭✭✭
It could just be amazingly rare.

Or it could be amazing quality FOR WHAT IT IS.

Or it could be amazingly beautiful.

Or it could be something that you didn't know existed.

Or it could be just plain amazing, for whatever reason.

Now..... Amaze us!

Now there's a question!! I, of course, love J-1776, but there have been so many fabulous coins that I have seen over the years, that I do not think that I could come up with one.

I think that the more that you are involved with numismatics, the more difficult it will be to pick one. My guess is that I will probably agree with most that are posted.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

  • I would honestly answer the French Colonies coin I posted here a week ago and that you owned Andy - not a glamorous and exciting coin type, but the condition of that piece compared to 100% of the other examples I've seen is simply unbelievable.

Where the heck was that thing all these years?

Well, it took me a while to figure out my answer, but it's the unique Roman Finish Proof 1921 $20 that had belonged to the Director of the Mint in 1921. I had never heard anything close to a rumor that the coin existed until it appeared in a Sotheby's sale in June of 2000. I was the underbidder to the winning phone bidder. I haven't seen the coin since.

I'd rather not say too much about that one. I'll be coming back for it one one of these days!

Two seated coins have blown me away due to their condition and rarity. The 1845-0 dime from Eliasberg in PCGS MS69 (7 points higher than second best) and the Knoxville 1838 NGC 68 No Drapery quarter that blows away nearly every high grade seated coin out there. These are coins that should not exist in such high grades.

1793 chain-- "The coin" considering the difficulties of the US mint at that time, the piece is truly amazing.

1792 Disme at FUN in January. An awesome feeling to hold it, even if I could only finger the plastic!

  • Andy....you disappoint me.....THAT coin isn't even killer toned! Seems like in all your years dealing with serious coins..........something else with color would be THAT one.
