New company?

I saw this and I thought I would get some reactions. I personally have bought once a few years back from this seller and it was a great transaction. It was so positive that I put him on my favorite sellers list and check his auctions regularly as he usally sells come cool stuff-- sometimes very fun to look at.

But tonight was the first time I have ever seen him sell graded cards that are graded by...well him

scgaynor

I am not ragging on him, but just thought I would throw it out there and see what people think. Isn't it a confilct of interest to sell your cards as a graded product, when it is you who is doing the "impartial" grading. I guess he doesn't claim that the grade is done by a third party....

What do you think?

I think it would depend. If he is just grading his own cards to sell, I don't see what the difference is between the seller stating the raw card is near mint or putting together a slab and labeling it near mint. However, if he is holding himself out as a third party grader, I would then think a conflict of interest arises.

I noticed these auctions too. He does not state anywhere that they are professionally graded. Plus, he is clearly stating his grade in a holder. I see nothing wrong with it, he is not spamming any companies. I suppose it is just like putting a grade on a raw card and than selling it on ebay. At least this way you can clearly see the grade he is giving the card. If you like his grades you can feel confident buying more cards - if you do not you do not have to buy them.
  • I don't see how it's any different than a dealer writing "NM" on a card - here you have the card in a protected holder with the opinion of an ebay seller on it. How much stock you put in the opinion is up to you.

I believe this is done by a number of coin dealers/companies, they grade the coin and encapsulate it. It also prevents card switching by the buyer...
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?

And from the scan, at least, this looks to be reasonably accurately graded.
  • I have bought raw cards from SCgaynor before and have always thought the descriptions were very accurate...

Scott Gaynor is typically a seller that can be trusted. He also is clearly not spamming other graded-card titles in his auction or description.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

i've only made one purchase from scgaynor, but i was definitely very pleased with it. seven '33-34 ice kings hockey cards that were described as vg/vg+ yielded a psa 5, two 4's, three 3's and one card that was deemed to have been cleaned. that kind of conservative grading is pretty rare among raw card sellers on ebay.

I am not banging on scott gaynor. Like I said I have purchased form him in the past and was very happy. I just thought that his new card holders were strange and I thought I'd share that with others to discuss (mainly becuase there hadn't been any new topics in a few days)

If I were him...I would list the description on the card on the banner. Instead of listing it as a baseball card...he would get more hits by listing the condition.

I think that not only is that acceptable, but not a bad idea depending on the cost of the holder. Condition is very accurate.

  • I wonder if these holders are sealed? It looks like a nice holder none the less. If its sealed than I believe its a good thing as long as mentioned before he doesnt hold himself out as a 3rd party grading service. You would then have to physically break it out to do otherwise with the card inside.
If it is a holder than can be opened, is hinged in some way than I would believe he would open himself up to the occassional unscrupulous character looking to put a lower grade example in and sell it as the label describes.
I've got to believe this is sealed.
It's also nice to see he didnt attach a number to the grade of VG/VG+. (3.5?) i nice effort overall. I wonder if he can really recoup the costs of doing it.

Never met a Vintage card I didn't like!
  • Methinks it is great! Holder making is pricey, however!
  • i dont think this is a good practice at all. now he must stand behind not only his word, but the word of his new pseudo grading company also. if people would wake up and realize that just because a card is graded, that doesnt necessarily mean that it is 100% accurate and authentic (see- PRO), but they dont. it gives them a fake sense of security, and creates an opportunity for sellers to make a killing

SGC, SCD, and now SCG? This third party grading thing is getting confusing. image
