Grades from PCGS and NGC are in!

MadMartyMadMarty Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭
Both orders were shipped and received on the same days. The PCGS order got back here a week before the NGC order. I also learned something else today, NGC is MUCH tougher on Jeffersons than PCGS for full steps. With PCGS I got 8 Full Step Nickels back, with NGC zero, zip, nada, nothing.

The PCGS order:

    Marty,

How are the grades compared to what you expected?

  • The NGC order has higher grades. Did you choose the nicest coins then split them up randomly? Or did you send the nicest ones to NGC?

Am I right in assuming you thought they all would get FS?

Thought I just read that you need six, count 'em, six steps to get FS from NGC; 5, 5.5 or 6 for ANACS and 5 for PCGS. Didn't ya' know that? image

The grades were right about what I expected, a little lower at PCGS and a bit higher at NGC, but the FS thing (all the NGC coins were 5-5.5 steps) really threw me. Basicly I pissed my NGC money away.

  • Sorry marty I thought you knew about 6 steps at NGC! image

  • How high does a 1971 Nickel have to grade to be worth more than the grading fee spent to grade it?

  • Marty what about a proof 1964, how good would it have to be to make it worthwhile

    ching ching ching!

congrats. btw NGC is also tougher on FBL and FB, dont know about FH.

I'll be glad when the services drop all the series specific strike designators and just evaluate and break out the strike grade from the overall grade).

(along with separate luster, toning, etc grades, where warrented

    Cockney,

If you're talking about the nickel, you need at least PR69CAM or PR68DCAM to make it worth submitting.

if you expected to get a Full Step designation with anything less than 6 complete and unbridged steps, the above is a correct statement. also, going on the assumption that the coins were on average equal, it should come as no surprise that the NGC coins were graded higher. i find that they routinely grade the series from 1-3 points higher than PCGS, both proof and mint state. perhaps that's in defference to the stricter FS designation.

    OK,

This is for you number guys.

    PCGS avg grade - 64.5
    NGC avg grade - 65.5

    Percent FS @ PCGS 57%
    Percent FS at NGC 0%

Avg per coin value based on CU price guide rounding the grade for both to 65 and 66 respectively, and including the non-FS PCGS coins.

    PCGS = $27.86
    NGC $5.00

As a submitter, PCGS is the service of choice for this lot. As a buyer, NGC is the choice for this lot.

    i would ask:
if you were walking down the road with a canoe under your arm and one of it's wheels fell off,
then how many pancakes would it take to fill up a doghouse ?

why am I not surprised you would ask that doops?

MadMarty??? why did you submit all the same thing? If 1 came back MS67 FS would you be way ahead?
