71 Kellogg's Clemente ?

I just had my latest submission(#484464) of 71 Kellogg's shipped. These were my free submissions. I received my first 10 in this set and it was the #5 Roberto Clemente. I don't believe I will be selling but anything is possible. Any idea from some of the experts on what it is worth? Any help would be appreciated.

    WOW! Great Job!

Tschaef, the only other '71 Kellogg's Clemente PSA 10 that I've seen a sale of was in an Andy Madec auction two or three years ago. It went for over $3,000. At the time it was a 1 of 1. Yours is a 1 of 3 so it still it worth a heck of a lot!

    Really Awesome!
  • congrats
  • They must have thought that card was mine and sent it to you by mistake. Just do them a favor and go ahead and forward it to me.
    Thanks....

Seriously, I think that's a card that would bring out the big players. If you put it in an auction, I doubt it would wind up in the hands of any of the Kelloggs collectors on the Registry. I've no idea on a value but 2-3k is not out of line.

  • Gentlemen-

You all have me thinking. I could finish a bunch of sets that I have been working on if I sold it. But I may never get a chance to own a card like this again.

    Contemplating,

It's easy for me to say "I'd keep the card" since I'm not in your position, but it's ultimately up to you. A PSA 10 would look great in your registered set, but, $2,000 - $3,000 would also look great in your wallet! image

I'll stick with my "I'd keep the card" stance. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

You are right, I am sure it will look good in the 71 set I am building. I went ahead and entered the card today, just to see. On the other hand, I have been thinking about other cards and how many raw cards I could have graded with the $$$.

Is it just me or does it seem that free submissions always grade better. Everytime I renew my membership and get the 4 free ones, I do well on those 4. Also at a National a couple years ago, Steve Rocchi gave me 5 free submissions and I did monsterously well on those. I think that had something to do with his intials being on top of the invoice though. image

  • Thought the card would be here today. NOT !! Oh well, I am still thinking about what to do. If I decide to sell, I will offer it to board memebers first, before I go the auction route.

  • I'd keep the card, you might be able to finish, or come close to finishing some other sets with the money from selling it, but then what? You start all over again. I look at this hobby as something that will never be complete. If I collect every set out there, what do I have left to push me on? Just my view of it.

I guess it just depends on where the 71 Kellogg's set ranks on your priority set. I ran into a similar situation with a different Kellogg's card about 6 months ago and the decision became easy for me when I realized the value. As you stated, I used the funds to grade quite a few more cards which allowed me to complete my cloth set and I also made a purchase of a nicer T206 that I would have never bought otherwise. The T206 is not a Cobb or one of the big guns, but a PSA 6 Evers is now one of the center pieces of my collection.

On the other hand, if 71 Kellogg's is your #1 priority, then it would be hard to part with.
    Looking for 77 cloth 9s and 10s.

You hit the nail on the head for me. You made my decision much easier with your explantion and advice. I listed the card on ebay just a few minutes ago( if I knew how to put the link up I would, I will learn soon). I started the bidding high with a high BIN also. If it doesn't sell I will not be disappointed, if it does, I will put some cash in my pocket for future card purchases and psa submissions. Thanks to everyone who helped me make this choice and good luck here to anyone who might bid on it. I really hope one of the great Kellogg's collectors here decides to take a stab at it.
