found new scanner technique-PICS added
These were my attempts this morning, 4/17/03.
I was trying to scan a couple Wayte Raymond toned mercs and all they looked like was kinda dark ugly coins. I placed them on the scanner and closed the top.
Then I tried scanning it with the lid open. It was much lighter and I could see that there was color on it. And then....
I placed the coin in a 2x2 and leaned that on (2) 2x2's to create an angle, 1 was too little and 3 was too much. The scan was clear and showed the color and luster. The green, red, and gold really showed up nicely.
Any other ideas?
thanks,
matt

We can't capture luster with a scanner, and due to tilting the coin to capture color we lose showing a good strike, but at least some can get the main idea. I've spent a ton of time learning to scan toned coins, I'd hate to get into a camera, lighting, and setup. Although I give credit to the folks on here that have some very nice camera images.
And also Tonelover was very helpful to me.
