Klueless about Kellogg's

First time poster...(actually I posted this on the Vintage forum and was kindly directed to put it here...)

I'm in the process of liquidating my Dad's and my collection. I've got two Kellogg's 3-d sets, one from 1980 (which I sold in three card lots with little success) and a 1974 set that is missing (I think it may be misplaced) the Ryan card.

Anyway, my question is this. I'm thinking some of the 74 cards may be worth grading. I'm reborn in the hobby so I'm new to grading (other than learning a lesson when submitting a re-colored 62.) While I'm picking up the pointers on regular cards, I'm clueless about how to judge/grade these Kellogg's cards.

First of all, they're not really paper, so I don't know if good corners are really difficult to achieve. Second, the 3-d surface/layers tend to bubble and crack if not properly taken care of. I imagine that's a big no-no, but are there standards for what's accepted wear? Centering I imagine is the same as regular cards - unless someone tells me different. Then there's the perforated edges. They leave little paper knubs on the edges, do these detract from the card? Finally, the ridged surface tends to scuff. Is this normal, or must PSA 8's and 9's be scuff free?

Can anyone point me to the standards for this set? Also, where can I find pricing information for them? SMR doesn't seem to have the 74 set. From surfing the posts, it seems there are a couple Kellogg's fans out there.

Thanks..

    Welcome to the board!

The Kellogg's collectors on this board are some of the most knowledgable and friendly members on this board. I'm sure they'll be along soon to give you some help.

    SportscardAdvocate, welcome image.

Let me make the follwoing suggestions to you. First of all if you don't have any long term interest in card collecting, and you just wish to sell the sets, you may want to first check Ebay to get price ideas on the individual cards or the completed sets for those years.

If you sticking around for a while, you may want to consider sending in a "test" submission to PSA to have some cards graded. Pick out a dozen or so of what you think are the sharpest cards (well centered, no cracks, minimal "curling'), and submit them to PSA for grading. You should first get a hold of a 10X magnifier with light to give you an edge on which cards to hand pick for submitting. If the grades come back PSA 9 or better than you're in business. If the cards come back PSA 8 or less even after you inspected them then the rest are probably not worth getting graded, and should be sold on Ebay as raw cards for people just looking to fill in sets.

    I hope that helps!

BTW, there is only SMR for the '70 and '71 Kellogg's sets at this time. Check with Ebay to get all price ideas on your cards.

  • For those of you hanging on the edge of your seats in suspense over what happened, I just received the news that the three cards I submitted all returned PSA 8. Oh joy, I can hardly contain my excitement. For anyone that's interested before I throw them on the fire, they're Johnny Bench, Sparky Lyle and Willie Davis. Kellogg's 74. Any resonable offer or trade accepted.
