The NGC copper coin Guarantee

I guess it has been a month since NGC has started to guarantee copper.Let's get some feedback. In your opinion; are the graders at which service more consistent, more correct and does it matter in which holder your copper coins are kept NGC,PCGS or ICG????

I wonder if the guaranty will change their grading in any way. I like the fact that they haven't been as rigid as PCGS with certain copper toning, that may change.

The mint state IH cent collections I've seen over the past year were mostly PCGS slabs, and even the top ranked NGC registry set is 2 to 1 PCGS. The biggest issue IH collectors seem to have with PCGS is with their NGC crossovers. So I get the feeling many of the nicest NGC IHs have found their way into PCGS slabs through the years. PCGS's guaranty may have been part of the reason but they've also been much more consistent with this series and earned their market value.
  • I sent in quite a few Indian cents at Charlotte and again here in Las Vegas at the T&G last week. IMO they have tightened up at least a half to a full point over where they have been. They are now tougher than PCGS and their coins are worth less and much harder to sell. Every one of the coins I got back from them would have no trouble crossing over at the same or higher grade at PCGS. By the way, none of them are for sale, so please don't ask. I see no reason to send them any copper for the time being. On the other hand, I would love to have a chance to buy any Indians or Lincolns that come back from there right now.

  • MS68, I find your comments most interesting and a grading charge like that will certainly throw the NGC copper market and pricing out of line. Is there any way to differentiate the new 10 year guaranteed copper slabs from the older ones?

That is interesting Dave. Do you think this is the only way for them to make up some ground on PCGS in this series?

NGC's guarantee of color for copper merely rises to the level of PCGS on the surface. What they actually do with a claim will prove the value of it. It still doesn't make up for the difference in grading standards. They are different, and I think about it everytime I buy copper. I don't really know how NGC can make up ground on PCGS in this series, unless they use higher standards and change the slab so we can tell the difference for the coins graded under the new standard. Over time, the coins slabbed under the old standard will be absorbed, much like the green holders.

If PCGS changed their standards and changed there slab inserts to pink, there would be some type of migration or swing in the value placed on coins graded in different slabs.

    Anybody make a claim yet?

  • toothpuller- I do not know the way to tell other than contacting customer service at NGC to verify that the coin in question would be covered under their new copper guarantee. If there is an easier way to tell, I do not know it. I sure wish they would come out with a new insert to make it easily distinguishable from the old slabs.

Paul- The trouble with instituting a new standard and with it a new grading guarantee is that how does that bode well with the tens of thousands of copper coins they have put in holders in the past that will now not make their new tighter standards? The coins graded prior to the new standard will become worthless and how does that make NGC look when people complain of purchasing coins for thousands of dollars that are now worth hundreds? Makes me want to think long and hard before purchasing any of their coins as how do I know that they will not make a change in some other series? Changing standards is not good business. People come to expect certain standards and changing them will cast doubt on their whole line of product.
