And the Lord commanded Mdwoods to go to the top of the mountain, As ordered Mdwoods climbed to the highest summit, On that summit he found a tablet with 10 laws carved on it. The Lord said if you follow these commandments you will get the grading results only reserved for kings. MD shuddered and asked, "Is this Homerunhall?" And the heavens exploded with thunder and lightning and the Lord said "Do not confuse me with false idols. I am the Lord, father of numeric grading, adjective gradng and no grading. Creater of all numismatics." MD shook in fear and said "Ok, Ok I believe you." He looked at the tablet and read: 1)When grading only use a 5 power glass. Anything stronger you loose the overall look of the coin and tend to misgrade it by focusing on small details instead of the overall look. 10 power and stronger are for diagnostic purposes.
2)You can't grade without proper lighting. Use a halogen or 100 watt bulb. Make sure the lighting is consistent so that your grading stays consisntent. Coins Shows you just do the best you can.
3)Look at as many coins as possible. The more coins you see the better feel you will have for how each series, date and mintmark will look.
4)Formulate your own opinion even if the coin is already graded by a reputable grading company. The coins in slabs aren't always accurate. There is also a big difference between a coin that just makes the grade and a coins that is premium for the grade. Seeing the difference make all the difference.
5) Learn to tell the difference between artificial toning and real toning.
6)Before mailing package grunt real fast while hopping around on one foot for 10 minutes.
7)Three days before eat 3 pounds on turnips.
8)Kidanap one of the graders pet goldfish and refuse to free them until you get at least 15 MS-70 grades.
9)Just because you see a coin that is graded like yours doesn't mean your coin will grade that way. Ooops--got serious again
10)Take the good with the bad. Some coins will be higher than expected and some lower. Learn from this. Usually there is a reason. The grading service isn't always wrong. Sometimes you are.
MD looked up and said "Hey thanks. That grunting thing sounds like real good advice."
"No problem", said The Lord. "By the way I have a few fallen angels that own grading services. If you happen to see them send them up here so we can have a chat."
