There was only one pattern ever produced for the $3.00 gold piece, what is the date of this coin, what famous set is part of, and what is its metal composition??

Dragon...I assume you don't count "die trials" as there are many years of those listed in the Judd book. The only pattern$3 gold pieces are from 1872...

    Judd 1235 in gold
    Judd 1236 in copper
    Judd 1237 in aluminum

They are called "Amazonian" patterns by some and they are part of a "set" that includes other gold denominations...and also a quarter, half, and dollar. The gold patterns have a different obverse design than the silver patterns. The silver patterns are technically "Barber's Amazonian design" but the gold patterns are also considered part of the set. They are all spectacular coins.

Ask Julian Leidman (JML on the message boards) about them. He owned the ultra rare, and ultra expensive, ones struck in gold. He knows all about them...and in fact he is one of the top pattern experts of all-time.
