I stayed out of the bidding on this one ...

... 1970 Topps World Champions

I knew Chris would have a high snipe in on this one, but I'm surprised it went that high (and I think he may be as well). The last time I checked, it was at $103.50 a few hours before closing and I thought Chris would get it for a little more than that. The POP report shows that there are currently 42 PSA 8s and 0 PSA 9s (there is one 9Q). SMR lists it at $46 in PSA 8 and $400 in PSA 9!?!? This is the first one I've seen in months and I believe the last one went for in the mid $100s (maybe someone can confirm this?). Where are all of these cards? I just looked through all 60 sets listed on the registry and found only 2 of them (interested in selling, Frank? image) Chris' will be the 3rd. Hopefully, ebay will be flooded with them tomorrow and there will be enough to go around at under SMR image. Hey, it could happen, right?

I am sure alot of Mets fans have this card along with Nolan Ryan fans. This was the miracle Mets team. It seems to me alot of Ryan collectors like to get his team card also. I also sure that kind of premium will get people to search this card out. I found two today and one has a good chance at an eight. Good luck in your quest as the chase is part of the fun.

  • I had been looking at card shows for a long time to find a decent ungraded one and had been unsuccessful and I lost the last one at near $300, and given that this would probably be the most difficult 8 or 9 of the last 20 cards I need, I threw caution to the wind. I just bought a 70 Series 1 Box but I am not counting on geting this card well centered.

  • Chris, I don't blame you a bit. Besides, that less money available to go after those 74 psa 10's.image So are 74's your next big project. I've noticed that you have been bidding on them.

    JEB,

Nope - sorry... I'm keeping this one! I've been living and dying (mostly dying) with my Mets since 1969. I was able to pick this one up at the ridiculous price of $85 (over 2 years ago!!!). There are a whole slew of people looking for it (set collectors, Met collectors, team card collectors, card #1 colllectors, etc...)

And Chris is right - rarely ever see it for sale...

  • My next projects are finishing 71 Topps, 75 Mini and 53 Bowman Color, and then 62 Topps and then back to the rest of the 70s. I bid on the Gorman Thomas as he was one of my favorite players as I child.

    All the best
