Modern Commemorative Uncirculated set completed (MS69s):

I have finally completed my uncirculated Modern Commemorative set! All are PCGS MS69. The reason I posted pictures of all of the coins is so my friends can see them. Most of my friends don't know one commemorative from another. Just thought I'd post my set on the forum too. BBC...

My Modern Commemorative set PCGS MS69

Check out my other sets too, especially my Early Commemoratives.

Way to go, Chad! Glad I could help with a couple of your coins! Do not...I REPEAT...Do not attempt to acquire any MS70 coins as they are very expensive and could put my #7 set in jeopardy!

HAHA! Don't worry! I am broke now.

I think I will keep them all at MS69s but If I ever get any more $$ I will upgrade some of my Early Commems.

    Chad:

NO, NO, NO--don't spend any more $$$ on early commemoratives. Everyone knows that the modern commemoratives are where the action is.

I am telling this to you as a fellow collector....never mind the fact that I have an early commemorative collection (that's well behind yours--currently 23) and have no modern commemorative collection. I say "NAIL all those other modern commemorative collectors!" image

I also say that your modern commemorative set is really nifty and the pictures make it truly nice. Everytime I see a set with pictures as nice as yours, I promise myself that I will learn how to take comparable pictures. But so far I have broken that promise every time.

Contrary to Marks advice, every collector knows instinctively that the Classics are the way to go when it comes to collecting coins for appreciation and also investment. Why collect ugly modern commemoratives with populations that will undoubtabley skyrocket over the coming years; rendering your set worthless or face value at best. Without further hesitation, I advise you to sell your entire modern set before thousands upon thousands of MS69 are made and take the money to put together the most awesome Classic Commemorative Set of all time. You will thank me! image
  • I think I will keep both sets and sell my raw Modern Commemorative Proof collection. I think the uncirculated Modern Commems are a better investment than the proofs. I have a complete Modern Proof collection in the US Mint boxes. I have many 3, 4, & 6 coin sets. Some are even the proof & uncirculated sets. I even have the 16 coin Olympic proof set in the cherry wood box. Should I slab them or sell them raw?

A serious comment: First, I don't know if you want to slab or sell your PR modern commemoratives raw. But, if you do decide to slab them and sell them, definitely try to sell your 16 coin cherrywood box. I have the 32 coin set in the cherrywood box, so a couple of weeks ago I watched an ebay auction for the 32 coin box alone. The box (I think with the COA but with NO coins) sold for over $500. While the 16 coin might not bring as much, nonetheless, I bet it sells. Ditto for your other cherrywood boxes.

    Chad,

Slab 'em. If you have a 1996W Smithsonian gold $5 that comes back MS70, I'll buy it from you.

Congratulations, Chad. The modern commem set has become impressive due to the number and variety of coins, and to a few designs that are classic, such as the eagles on the '84 Oly and '94 POW dollars, the reverse of the '92 Columbus half, and the '88 Oly and '99 Washington $5 coins. Many of the coins after 1995 with mintages of less than 20,000 are already on a par price-wise with the commems from 1892-1954, and they should have a bright future.

Now that your set is complete, it's just a matter of keeping it current, which should be much easier on your budget.

My luck, I would be sitting on a MS68 collection. image
  • I think your set is very nice as a complete set of 69's. As a mater of fact BBC, why tarnish it with those even numbered MS70's? If/when you find those, please let MEimage know and I will try to complete my EVEN numbered set.image
