BUT THERE WERE SOME "WINNERS" FOR 2002....

I commented on another thread concerning the relative ease of producing 2002(p) and (d) Lincolns in PCGS-MS69RD, especially from the Mint Sets that were sold by the Mint towards the end. I also see some of the recent slabbing taking place on 2002 product as sort of the "last horrah" before the 2003 Mint Sets come out and the focus shifts to making 2003 coins. BUT, even with certain "pops" quite high on some 2002 product (especially "p" mint coins), consider this:

1. NOT A SINGLE "D" MINT STATE QUARTER WAS EVER SLABBED MS69 FOR ANY 2002 STATE!! AND EVEN "P" MINT COINS RANGED FROM A LOW OF POP "4" TO NO MORE THAN ROUGHLY A DOZEN COINS FOR THE MOST COMMON STATE QUARTER.

2. THE 2002(D) NICKEL HAS PROVEN TO BE A SIGNIFICANTLY TOUGH COIN IN GRADES MS66FS AND HIGHER. AN MS68FS MAY PROVE TO BE AN EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE COIN.

3. THE 2002(D) KENNEDY HAS PROVEN TO BE A SIGNIFICANTLY TOUGH COIN IN GRADES MS68 AND HIGHER. MS68 EXAMPLES COULD BE HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER IN YEARS AHEAD

4. THE 2002(D) SAC HAS PROVEN TO BE A SIGNIFICANTLY TOUGH COIN IN GRADES MS68 AND HIGHER. AN MS69 MAY PROVE TO BE AN EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE COIN.

5. THE 2002(D) ROOSIE HAS PROVEN TO BE A SIGNIFICANTLY TOUGH COIN IN GRADE MS69. NONE WERE EVER SLABBED!! AND EVEN THE 2002(P) ROOSIE ONLY SAW (3) MS69's FOR THE YEAR AND THESE COINS WERE REMARKABLE SPECIMENS.

6. THE 2002(p) SAC AND KENNEDY HAVE PROVEN TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY TOUGH COINS IN GRADES MS69. ONLY -2- SACS AND -0- KENNEDYS WERE SLABBED.

7. THE 2002(P) NICKEL HAS PROVEN TO BE A SIGNIFICANTLY TOUGH COIN IN GRADES MS68FS AND HIGHER. AN MS68FS MAY PROVE TO BE A SCARCE COIN.

Any thoughts on these as we move into the slabbing of 2003 coins? image Wondercoin

I often refer to the post 1998 coins as ultra-moderns to differentiate them from
the older moderns which were completely ignored. Eventually these coins are
likely to form a subset or transitional set of moderns. As collectors become more
efficient at finding the nice coins and forming collections, there would be higher pop-
ulations even if the mint were not improving the quality of the coins being produced.
Many of these transitional coins will prove to be winners in the long run.

I agree Mitch. The Nickels were especially tough to find nice. D mint Quarters were much tougher in high grades than the P mint coins.
Roseys were common in 68, but 69s (I got a superb one from you, thanks) have a pop of only 3 coins. Lincolns were generally very nice. MS69 Lincolns were probably never cheaper. There will be some sleepers for 2002.
