rare Washington Penny for you to view

Hi there! This is a rare Washington Penny. I have had it conserved in order to remove damaging PVC residue, which is the reason for the uneven color. It could have been dipped and recolored to give it a more even look, but we asked that the surfaces experience the minimal amount of disturbance possible in order to retain as much of the proof finish as possible (sorry, no "before" image). The coin had sticky residue all over it before. Now, I believe it grades PR-55, although the reverse looks choice.

The coin is not available for sale. I'm displaying it strictly for your viewing pleasure and education.

i know only a little - from what i remember. minted in britain for export to the u.s., i believe by a co. that was hopeful of getting a contract to mint coinage for the fledgling newly-independent united states. they used washington's motif in hopes that it would prove popular in the u.s., thus getting support for a minting contract.

i may be wrong about some or all of this, but i think that's about right. i'd suggest starting w/ breen, which i may do when i get home later
