Which Auction Firm to Consign to at Baltimore 2003 ANA

I am contemplating consigning coins to an auction centered about the upcoming ANA in Baltimore.

The coins are mostly higher grade and scarcer Morgan dollars.

I have consigned to Heritage and Bowers and Merena in the past. However, I received a copy of Coin World today and the staff of Bowers and Merena seems to have become split between a company called Bowers and Merena and another designated American Numismatic Rarities both with post office boxes in Wolfboro, NH.

In your opinion what would be the best company (not neccessarily limited to the firms mentioned above)with which to consign such material at the upcoming Baltimore series of auctions.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • It depends what you are consigning.

Respond here and I'll give you my opinion based on what it is and what kind of buyer it is most likely to appeal to.

One thought. Heritage is up first at the beginning of the week, and will cater more to dealers attending the show. B&M is up at the start of the show, and should have more collectors present. Depends on what buying audience you think your coins will best appeal to.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

I would consign to Heritage. They are slowly but surely putting their competition out of the business.

They are on top of their game.

I would consign coins under $2,500 to their Internet only auctions and more expensive coins to their signature sale.

Consign early so their staff will have the time to write good descriptions and take good photos.

The other person i would consign to is me. I charge 15% of the price the coins sell for. The coins get listed the Thursday after I recieve
them if the consignment isn't too big, run for 10 days and end on a Sunday night. I pay as soon as the coins have been accepted by
    the buyer.

You may want to try the new guys in Wolfeboro. Everyone knows them, despite the new company, and they may be willing to give you a better deal since they are new. Nothing to lose by asking...
  • The only caveat about Heritage's auctions is that they are so massive that coins can sometimes get lost within the catalog. Bowers seems to be advertising big for the ANA, so you'd probably get the best terms from them at the moment. Or, you could give them to a major dealer on memo and see what they'd do for you. The new Wolfeboro clan may be a good idea, but I don't know if they'll be auctioning by August...
    Goodluck on the coins!

Are there multiple companies holding auctions at the Baltimore ANA? I thought there was only one company selected to conduct the auctions.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Well, there's always the "official" auction of the show. But, most of the time, the other auction companies schedule auctions for earlier in the week, whether they be just on one day or over 3 days.
Take for instance, Long Beach. The official auction was Heritage this past February. But, the Goldbergs and Superior had auctions earlier in the week. Same goes for FUN, and the summer ANA...Hope this helps
