David Vogel--there's a blast from the past. I think I remember hearing something about him recently and if memory serves it wasn't glad tidings. I would be interested to hear also, if anybody has an update.
I seem to remember some vague negative publicity too, but can't recall what it is. I do know that I've been seeing small ads in Coin World's classified section recently in which he advertises to buy or help you sell.
I remember seeing his ads in the numismatic media. I think there was also a Tina Vogel who was his PR director. I remember him touting "investment" coins but have not seen anything in several years.
isn't that the whak-job who owns a coin-biz w/ his wife? like, his title is president, ceo, vp of marketing & director of purchasing, while his wife is cfo, executive vp of sales, manager of manufacturing & coin-cleaning supervisor?
I had an experience with David Vogel about 5 years ago. I was wanting to sell a really nice collection. His advertising seems to imply that he could get me some very high prices, so I asked him to send info. I did not like his offer, and have not had any further dealings with him. Havent heard from him since.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
The FBI placed an ad in the Numismatist last year. They were asking for anybody who had dealt with the Vogels to come forward. Apparently some people were financially hurt by dealing with David Vogel? I never heard the details.
Boy, this brings back memories. About 8 years ago, I bought a couple of coins from a Vogel Auction. Get this, I bought a NGC bust dollar in XF45 for ~500 (I can't remember the date) and a 1877 Trade Dollar for ~$850 (PCGS-63). The prices were right and the coins were very nice. I hope that I didn't contribute to a scam in any ways.
The ad in The Numismatist saying the FBI was looking for info about David Vogel wasn't placed by the FBI. When I saw the ad I called David to find out what the story was. He then called the FBI and they said they had nothing to do with it. They said when they do an investigation placing an ad like that isn't normal practice. I suspect someone who wasn't happy with his services placed it. All it was was a link to a website to file complaints.
David Vogel has left the coin business to sell drugs online. He's been very, very, very successful and I think he's finally made the million dollars he's dreamed off. He has a clinic here in Dallas but sells all over the country. Here is a link to his website.Madison Pain Clinic
He's trying to sell the business and when he does he says he'll be back in the coin business.
My one encounter with David Vogel did not leave me with a sense of comfort regarding his legitimacy, trustworthiness, honor or integrity. I purchased a beautiful 1877 proof shield nickel from him on Ebay, NGC PF67, which at the time was a pop 1/0 or 2/0 coin. (Now I think it's 4/0 or 5/0 ... amazing how pops continue to climb even in older series as coins are endlessly "played with" and new slabs "get made" ... if this can happen in older series like proof shields, or to a coin like the 1877 5c with a mintage of about 1250, imagine what will happen to all the deluded collectors of high-grade high-priced moderns over time ... ) The deal went for about $3500, which was a very good price for this coin (the coin recently realized $6037.50 at the Heritage Charlotte Signature Sale). However, David tried to get out of it. Then a third party contacted me and told me he owned the coin, and that David had no right to sell it. There were threats, discussion about contracts, etc etc. It was a three-ring circus, but I got the coin in the end. Left a bad taste in my mouth for sure. Then later David called me and tried to interest me in penny stocks. Ugh. Caveat emptor !! I think the owner had consigned his collection to David for sale, based on David's ads that he can realize top prices for coins, and all he did was put them up on Ebay. Then the owner had second thoughts !!
P.S. I find the idea of David Vogel selling drugs online both hilarious and appropriate. I hope he stays with that line of business and does not return to numismatics.
TheNumish and Sunnywood............"thankyou". That was the kind of stuff I was wondering about. I can now close the chapter on David Vogel and move on to the next slimeball.

We would all be surprised if the FBI or the DEA investigated him, wouldn't we?
