Planchet crack 2 /12 Indian question

theboz11theboz11 Posts: 6,576 ✭✭✭
Just bought a 1925-D Indian 2 1/2 AU-55 with a planchet crack that runs on the reverse from in front of the "U" and runs clockwise all the way to the last tail feathers. Is this worth a submission and what catagory should I put it under. It is not jewerlry ring marks.

i am no error expert, but i do know this. gold coins w/ planchet voids, laminations or cracks are RARE. i have only seen a couple. did you cherry it?

if you mean a DIE crack, that's something different - not nearly so rare

    digipic?

Under a 10X it has the definite look of a crack verses an die brake which would have left a raised area I believe. It is filled with years of accumulated dirt but shows depth. How do I get a picture on here, LOL.

Not a planchet crack. I'm not sure what causes this effect, but it's extremely common on Indian quarter eagles.

Thank You Andy. Do you still have that copper 1847 2 1/2 trial piece, just wondered what happened to it.

I wish it was 1847! It was 1874. Long gone for a short profit. Find me another!

How short my memory is LOL, That was my jewel for many years and I wish I could get some more for you. Hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I did.

  • Looks like it was removed from a bezel.

Kind of thought that myself when I first got it but luster is uniform and no marks on the front and this LOOKS like a crack and not rub or sqeeeze.

This appears to be a regular occurence on the $2 1/2 and $5 indian gold coins. I have a few coins with this also and if you look through auction archives you will find this on many coins. I think this has something to do with there being no raised rim on these coins. I asked this same question on the NGC forum with no real answer. mike image
  • Most 1925-D Quarter Eagles are poorly struck at the borders with clear signs of the dies having been buckled.
